Target’s Stores Become an ICE Battleground in Hometown Minneapolis

The federal immigration crackdown in Minnesota has descended on the stores and parking lots of Target, putting the hometown retailer in a tough political spot as it faces pressure from some locals to keep border protection agents out.

That pressure came to a head after immigration officials detained two Target employees inside the vestibule of a suburban store late last week after what appeared to be some verbal sparring in the parking lot. “I’m literally a U.S. citizen!” one shouted as they escorted him into a van. 

Both are American citizens and were later released, local officials say. In a social-media post on Monday, the Department of Homeland Security said an individual in the video had been “arrested for assaulting a federal law enforcement offers [sic].”

A U.S. citizen on her way to a medical appointment in Minneapolis was dragged out of her car and detained by immigration officers, according to a statement released by the woman on Thursday, after a video of her arrest drew millions of views on social media.

That video is the latest in a deluge of online content that documents an intensifying immigration crackdown across the midwestern city, as thousands of federal agents execute arrests amid protests in what local officials have likened to a “federal invasion.”

In the video, one masked agent smashes Rahman’s passenger side window while others cut her seatbelt and drag her out of the car through the driver’s side door. Numerous guards then carried her by her arms and legs towards an ICE vehicle.

Two questions seem not to have occurred to this blue-ribbon committee: a) if they wish to “engage” (whatever that means) those who want to “build Jewish lives,” how is it that the desire to build Jewish lives was not strong enough to deter them from marrying out of our faith? And b) did the committee ever wonder why it is that among Orthodox Jews, intermarriage is practically nonexistent? Could it be that for the Orthodox, the performance of mitzvos is a must , as is intensive Torah study, as is strong prayer and family life, as is unequivocal disapproval of interdating and intermarriage? Could it be that for the Orthodox, observance of Judaism is not the subject of consensus from focal groups and listening sessions, but instead emanates from Above? Which leads to another point: The news release is very verbose, but one word is missing. That word is “G-d.”
