Mind of G-d Newton vs Leibnitz

I'm reading "The Clockwork Universe: Isaac Newton, the Royal Society, and the Birth of the Modern World: Isaac Newton, the Royal Society, & the Birth of the Modern World" by Edward Dolnick and wanted to share this quote with you.

"Leibniz was perhaps the last man who thought it was possible to know everything. The universe was perfectly rational, he believed, and its every feature had a purpose. With enough attention you could explain it all, just as you could deduce the function of every spoke and spring in a carriage. For Leibniz, one of the greatest philosophers of the age, this was more than a demonstration of almost pathological optimism (though it was that, too). More important, Leibniz’s faith was a matter of philosophical conviction. The universe had to make perfect sense because it had been created by an infinitely wise, infinitely rational God. To a powerful enough intellect, every true observation about the world would be self-evident, just as every true statement in geometry would immediately be obvious. In all such cases, the conclusion was built in from the start, as in the statement “all bachelors are unmarried.” We humans might not be clever enough to see through the undergrowth that obscures the world, but to God every truth shines bright and clear. In fact, though, Leibniz felt certain that God had designed the world so that we can understand it. Newton took a more cautious stand. Humans could read the mind of God, he believed, but perhaps not all of it. “I don’t know what I may seem to the world,” Newton famously declared in his old age, though he knew perfectly well, “but, as to myself, I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.” Newton’s point was not simply that some questions had yet to be answered. Some questions might not have answers, or at least not answers we can grasp. Why had God chosen to create something rather than nothing? Why had He made the sun just the size it is? Newton believed that such mysteries might lie beyond human comprehension. Certainly they were outside the range of scientific inquiry. “As a blind man has no idea of colors,” Newton wrote, “so have we no idea of the manner by which the all-wise God perceives and understands all things.” Leibniz accepted no such bounds. God, he famously declared, had created the best of all possible worlds. This was not an assumption, in Leibniz’s view, but a deduction. God was by definition all-powerful and all-knowing, so it followed at once that the world could not have been better designed. (Even for one of the ablest of all philosophers, this made for an impossible tangle. If logic compelled God to create the very world we find ourselves in, didn’t that mean that He had no choice in the matter? But surely to be God meant to have infinite choice?)"

Justice Dept. says many Jan. 6 pardons extend to crimes after that date

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2025/03/10/justice-department-jan6-pardons/

When the FBI raided the Baltimore County home of Elias N. Costianes in February 2021, they found cocaine, testosterone, marijuana, a scale and guns. “The defendant was a drug dealer,” prosecutors would later say, adding, “he was also armed.” Costianes said he was merely supplying himself and friends.

In September 2024, a federal judge sentenced Costianes, who pleaded guilty to possessing a gun while using illegal drugs, to a year and a day in federal prison. But Costianes then played a new card: He was also part of the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, and President Donald Trump had pardoned him.

Costianes claimed that the pardon also covered his gun conviction because the FBI raid was related to his pardoned actions on Jan. 6.

And the government agreed.

Why Canada Is Giving Mark Carney a Shot

 https://time.com/7266178/canada-mark-carney-election-prime-minister/

When Trump started attacking Canada, and Trudeau announced his resignation, the Liberals surged in the polls. The upcoming election now looks like a dead heat. Since candidates usually get a boost coming out of a leadership convention, the Conservatives will start out as the underdogs, a shocking turnaround after two years where they were leading by 20 points and the Liberals faced electoral oblivion.

Underneath the horse-race numbers, there is more bad news for the Conservatives. Polling shows that voters are more likely to trust Carney than Poilievre to manage Trump—perhaps because part of Poilievre’s base is pro-Trump.

U.S. "not an agent of Israel," envoy says amid objections to Hamas talks

 https://www.axios.com/2025/03/09/adam-boehler-hamas-israel-talks

U.S. hostage envoy Adam Boehler said Sunday that while he understands Israel's concerns over direct talks with Hamas, the U.S. is "not an agent of Israel."

Boehler assured that he was not close to a deal with Hamas after the meetings in Doha, which were largely centered around securing the release of American hostage Edan Alexander and the bodies of four deceased American hostages, sources told Axios.

Boehler said he's "sympathetic" to top Israeli leaders' disapproval of his meetings, but he emphasized the U.S. is "not an agent of Israel" with "specific interests at play."

Boehler said he wanted to ascertain the vision of a "realistic" end-game for Hamas during the talks.
"The reality is what I wanted to do is jump start some negotiations that were in a very fragile place," he said.

District Court rules to keep IVF child with birth mother following embryo mix-up

 https://www.timesofisrael.com/district-court-rules-to-keep-ivf-child-with-birth-mother-following-embryo-mix-up/

The Central District Court overturned a lower court decision in the IVF mix-up scandal on Monday, and ruled that a 2-year old girl born in 2022 following an embryo transfer mistake at an Assuta IVF clinic must remain with her birth parents, who have been raising her, and not given to her genetic parents.

The ruling, which is the latest twist in the emotional and long-running saga, reversed a decision by the Rishon Lezion Family Court in November last year, which ruled that the young girl, whose name is given only as Sophia, be transferred to the custody of her genetic parents, after being raised for over two years by her birth mother and her partner.

One of Israel's goals in Doha – repair the damage caused by Boehler

 https://www.israelhayom.com/2025/03/10/one-of-the-israels-goals-in-doha-repair-the-damage-caused-by-boehler/

Israel Hayom has learned that Boehler's diplomatic approach was controversial within the White House from the beginning. Beyond his problematic statements regarding Israel, he promised Hamas concessions that both the US and Israel officially reject, such as a long-term ceasefire. These promises raised the organization's expectations and created hope among its members that they could secure concessions that had not previously been considered. According to sources familiar with the details, one of the primary objectives of the team departing for Doha Monday will be to repair the diplomatic damage created by Boehler's statements and reset expectations in the negotiations.

Wall Street Fears Trump Will Wreck the Soft Landing

 https://www.wsj.com/economy/trump-team-recession-hard-landing-c8f23d5d?mod=WSJ_home_mediumtopper_pos_1

For the past year, U.S. economic policymakers have been singularly focused on achieving a so-called soft landing that brings inflation down without a recession. Now, a new team of pilots are considering a course correction that, by their own acknowledgment, might tip the economy toward a hard landing.

President Trump and his senior advisers in recent days have signaled indifference to rising risks that trade uncertainty chills private-sector investment. They have argued a “detox” might be needed in spending and hiring, that falling stock values aren’t a big worry, and that inflation could rise in the short run.

After Trump turns against Zelensky and other allies, could Israel be next in line?

 https://www.timesofisrael.com/after-trump-turns-against-zelensky-and-other-allies-could-israel-be-next-in-line/

If Trump could turn on Ukraine, not to mention close American allies like Canada, Colombia, and Jordan, then who says he won’t do the same to Israel?

Rendering the question more pressing, Trump has already done so to Netanyahu himself. After four years of working together during Trump’s first term — which included historic achievements like the Abraham Accords and decisions like moving the US embassy to Jerusalem — Trump lashed out at his erstwhile ally, accusing him of disloyalty and saying “F*ck him,” after Netanyahu congratulated Biden on his presidential victory.

And amid all the support Trump and his team have given Israel, there are fissures emerging that make the entire facade of support seem less stable than the Israeli government wants to believe.

Will There Be a Trump Recession?

 https://www.wsj.com/opinion/recession-donald-trump-fox-news-economy-tariffs-markets-5e81f1d6?mod=hp_opin_pos_1

Recession fears are roiling markets, as tech stocks and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell sharply again on Monday. Stock prices have been richly valued for some time, and this may be merely a market correction. But there are also signs of a slowing economy that should have the Trump Administration on alert.

Mr. Trump didn’t help the mood with his cagey response to a question by Fox News host Maria Bartiromo in a Sunday interview about whether he expects a recession this year. “I hate to predict things like that,” he replied. “There is a period of transition, because what we’re doing is very big.”

Cracks are forming in America’s economy. Trump is a big reason why

 https://edition.cnn.com/2025/03/10/economy/us-economy-trump/index.html

Cracks are forming in the economy’s foundation: Layoffs are mounting, hiring is slowing, consumer confidence is eroding and inflation is picking up speed. Although all of those things would almost certainly be happening if former Vice President Kamala Harris had won the election, the uncertainty that President Donald Trump’s economic policy has unleashed is exacerbating those problems.

Dow plunges 890 points after Trump declines to rule out recession Promises made Promises Kept!

 https://thehill.com/business/5185665-stocks-slump-as-recession-fears-rattle-wall-street/

The stock market kicked off the week with steep losses Monday after President Trump declined Sunday to rule out the U.S. economy slowing into recession.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed with a loss of 890 points Monday, falling 2.1 percent. The Nasdaq composite closed with a loss of 4 percent, and the S&P 500 index closed down 2.7 percent.

Stocks have fallen steadily since the start of March in response to a string of underwhelming economic data and whipsaw tariff announcements from the Trump administration. But the selloff intensified Monday after Trump demurred on his outlook for the U.S. economy in a Sunday interview.

Stocks Get Hammered After Donald Trump Refuses to Rule Out Recession

The U.S. stock market's decline deepened on Monday, with the S&P 500 sliding 2.7 percent as concerns grew over how much economic strain President Donald Trump's tariff policy and trade war will impose on Americans.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 2.1 percent, while the Nasdaq Composite took the heaviest hit, plunging 4 percent in its worst day since 2022.

On Sunday, Trump said the U.S. is going through a transitional period with respect to his trade policy.

Turmoil within DOGE spills into public view as Musk’s group confronts a PR crisis

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2025/03/10/doge-musk-rebrand-trump-conflicts/

Elon Musk’s DOGE is hunting for “wins” as it races to finish slashing the federal bureaucracy and move on to the more constructive work of building digital tools for the government.

Facing weeks of negative headlines and growing pressure from within the Trump administration, the U.S. DOGE Service is racing to finish the first phase of its assignment — slashing the federal bureaucracy — and move on to what the team hopes will be seen as more constructive work: creating sleek tools for navigating government services.

Throughout DOGE, the need to find and champion positive achievements is seen as urgent, according to two people familiar with the group’s internal workings. One key ally, General Services Administration official and former Tesla employee Thomas Shedd, told his staff during a meeting last week that “I need wins to defend,” according to audio obtained by The Washington Post.
