Among the “less overtly sexual” behavior cited in the report as being unlawfully “gender-based” was Cuomo’s apparent habit of “allowing senior staff members to sit on his lap at official functions” and “lying down with his head on the lap of staff members who are women.” This, the report alleges on page 148, was a key component of the overall “hostile work environment.”
But parsed out elsewhere in the report—evidently causing it to be missed by frenetic pundits—is the revelation that “none” of the staff involved in the lap-sitting activity “reported feeling uncomfortable with this behavior.”
In fact, the report’s authors concede, “a number of witnesses we spoke to informed us that all of this behavior led to a sense among staff members in the Executive Chamber that personal attention from the Governor, even if flirtatious … was not only normal, but to be valued.” This would seem to be exculpatory information of a kind—but a search across Google and Twitter suggests it’s been omitted almost entirely from the ensuing press coverage. Instead, these exculpatory testaments were somehow reconfigured by the report’s authors as evidence of Cuomo’s guilt. In the rush to axe Cuomo, media accounts appear to have wholly glossed over this discrepancy.

It has always been obvious to anyone paying attention that Cuomo is a mini-Trump. He has the same appetite for authoritarianism as the former president: during the pandemic he has drawn scrutiny for cancelling special elections, issuing executive orders and consolidating power. Like Trump he has nothing but disdain for his detractors, particularly if they happen to be more qualified than he is. The New York Times recently reported that nine top New York health officials have resigned during the pandemic, with many of them telling the Times that Cuomo had asked them to match their health guidance to his decisions. But who needs experts, eh? Not the all-knowing Cuomo. “When I say ‘experts’ in air quotes, it sounds like I’m saying I don’t really trust the experts,” Cuomo said of pandemic policies in a recent news conference. “Because I don’t.”

After the incendiary 2005 tape was released just weeks before the 2016 election, where Trump can be heard bragging about sexually assaulting women, he dismissed his actions as mere “locker room” talk and went on to win the election. The dozens of women who have stepped forward to describe flagrant misbehavior by the former president have been repeatedly demeaned and dismissed. In 2019, Trump said one of his most prominent accusers, E. Jean Carroll, was “totally lying,” and added, just for that special dash of credibility, that she was “not my type.”
In addressing the allegations leveled at him, Cuomo took a similar, albeit more eloquent, approach, focusing on his own misunderstood behavior rather than slandering those who stepped forward. “The facts are much different than what has been portrayed,” Cuomo mewled during his response, claiming that his accusers were “misinterpreting” his behavior and demeanor toward them. He had done nothing wrong, he insisted, and was going nowhere. “I do it with everyone!” he said of the allegations that he inappropriately touched state staffers. “Black and white, young and old, straight and LGBTQ, powerful people, friends, strangers, people who I meet on the street.”
It’s not as though Cuomo has zero defenders. But those who are stepping up—devoted Donald Trump supporters like Newsmax host Greg Kelly, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, and Gristedes billionaire John Catsimatidis—might not be the people the governor wants in his corner. Kelly, who on Tuesday called Cuomo the subject of “a freakin’ witch hunt,” has himself been accused of sexual misconduct and, along with Giuliani, shown a penchant for unhinged conspiracy theories. (He has denied all wrongdoing.) “I’m not buying it,” Kelly said of the attorney general’s report, an assessment that loses some weight given that he spent months denying the reality of the 2020 election.
U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik wants New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to “resign and be arrested immediately.” The New York Republican is incensed on behalf of the 11 women whom, according to evidence in a report from the state attorney general, he sexually harassed. “These brave women deserve swift and definitive justice,” Stefanik says.
What’s rich is Stefanik passing judgment on Cuomo when she has sold her political soul to former President Donald Trump and the ethically, morally, legally, constitutionally and sexually compromised mess of a party he leads. She got her leadership job – No. 3 in the GOP House hierarchy – after Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming was ousted for insufficient fealty to Trump. Cheney had voted to impeach him over his role in the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol attack by violent Trump supporters.
