It depends on how they're doing. An immigrant who lands a good job, a nice home in the suburb and most importantly, acceptance by his surrounding social group will assimilate. An immigrant who winds up in the bad part of town and can't get ahead no matter how much he tries will seek out similar misery and maintain a separate identity.
