Women with this condition are often misdiagnosed. Its new name could help.
A global panel of experts and patient advocates published a paper in the Lancet to announce that PCOS has been renamed to polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, or PMOS, to more accurately reflect that it’s a whole-body endocrine and metabolic condition and that many people who have it never develop ovarian cysts.
PMOS is more comprehensive. “The new name, PMOS, highlights the complex nature of this syndrome and the involvement of multiple systems, including metabolic, reproductive, psychological and dermatological concerns,” said Nair, of OSU.
I hate when they do this.
ReplyDeleteUsed to be autism. Then it was pervasive develoopment disorder. Then autism spectrum disorder. Now it's neurodivergent. Why change the name? The patients are the same.
Used to be propionobacterium acnes, now it's cutibacterium acne and there's nothing cute about it.
Used to be Non-Alcohol Steatohepatosis, now it's Metabolic Associated Steatohepatosis. Why change the name? the patients are still too fat.
So PCOS is now PMOS. I'm betting someone's making money off the change.
