Jewish Word | What Is Cancel Culture—and What Does Judaism Say About It?

The term is new, but the questions surrounding canceling are not. They have surfaced in Judaism just as they have in other religions. “The most drastic type of canceling is when we say Yemach Shemo—blot out their name,” says Brandeis University sociologist Sylvia Barack Fishman. “Jews traditionally use that phrase for the Nazis. So when something is a moral monstrosity, that’s when one cancels [it].” Even then, Jewish tradition usually stops just shy of complete cancelation, she adds. Deuteronomy commands us to “blot out the memory of Amalek,” yet the same verse instructs us to “not forget.” That’s why every Shabbat before Purim, Jewish communities read the Torah portion reminding them of Amalek’s sins against the Israelites.

  1. There's a book by Prof. R' Marc Shapiro detailing quite a lot of attempts at cancel culture in the Chareidi community. Historical revision, tearing out pages of books with the wrong approbations in them, even Artscroll recently got caught censoring one of the commentators in their version of the Mikraos Gedolos and when caught, tried to explain it away.

  2. So are you saying the Chareidim are Woke folks or just acknowledging it is not new nor a unique characteristic of the Left or Democrats?

  3. The latter. Cancelling someone you don't like is as old as history. Seriously, what is putting someone in cheirem or nidui? That's official Torah-level cancellation right there. That should answer the headline on this post as to what does Judaism have to say about it? We're all in favour of it but only when it's done by specifically qualified individuals based on specific legal principles.

  4. And Trump and Fox News are specifically qualified based on specific legal principles' That is why Trump and the GOP say the election was stolen, the Pandemic is not a serious problem and they drained the swamp!

  5. How did this turn to Trump? Does everything have to turn to him? The post was about cancel culture in Judaism, not Trump.

Seriously I sometimes think "I hate Trump!" is the seig Heil of the liberal side of America.

  6. I guess you think Trump had nothing to do with cancel culture - What planet do you live on?
