https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criminal_stereotype_of_African_Americans
The criminal stereotype of African Americans in the United States is an ethnic stereotype according to which African Americans, and African American males in particular, are dangerous criminals.[1][2]
The origin of this stereotype is that as a demographic they are
proportionally over-represented in the numbers of those that are
arrested for committing crimes: For example, according to official FBI
statistics,[3]
in 2015 51.1% of people arrested for homicide were African American;
even though African American people account only for 13.4% of the total
United States population.[4] The figure of the African-American man as a criminal has appeared frequently in American popular culture,[5][6][7] further reinforcing this image in the collective unconscious (in the form of this negative stereotype).
Oh the irony. Popular media has played a huge role in creating and reinforcing the image of Blacks as violent and criminal. Countless movies and TV shows depict them in this fashion. Yet who runs Hollywood? The same liberals who declare that depicting them as violent and criminal is racism!
ReplyDeletenonsense!
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding? The media is hugely influential. Here's a subtle one but important nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteTell me, who oppressed, tortured and murdered more people in the 20th century? The fascists or the communists? Of course it was the communists but to this day, wearing a swastika gets you attacked while wearing a hammer and cycle gets you a "Wow, he's a cool radical" look. Why? Because McCarthy was right. Hollywood has a long history of being infected with communist sympathizers. Today we call them liberals. They spent decades whitewashing the Soviets and Red Chinese, playing down the horrors of their regimes while ensuring we'd never forget the Nazis and their evils. Think about it - Hitler = bad. Stalin? Well, you know, he might have done a few things wrong but overall he just wanted a fairer society! The mind boggles.
That same influence extends to perception of race. From singing Negros in the 1950's to servants in the 60's to Blaxpoitation in the 70's, Hollywood has always had an image for the Blacks. There are exceptions, of course, like Morgan Freeman and Harry Belafonte, men who were too classy to cast in anything other than dignified roles, but the rest? Criminals, rappers, gangsters, and the like.
