Among the hundreds of #ObamaGate retweets President Trump sent over
the weekend was a widely circulated meme with a photo of former
President Barack Obama stating, “First Ex-President To Speak Against
Successor.” Mr. Trump retweeted the meme, writing, “He got caught,
OBAMAGATE!”
The meme had been seen on the Internet in past years. Now it’s adding fuel to the current #ObamaGate fire on Twitter.
Is Obama the only president in U.S. history to denounce his successor?
The short answer is no. There are several presidents in recent
history who have spoken out against their successors to different news
and media outlets.
It's always dangerous for ex-presidents to speak out against the current one. After all, who knows how Obama would've handled this crisis? The reflex answer is "Well anyone would've done better than Trump!" but that's more due to TDS than rational thinking. One could make a good argument, for example, that the president who styles himself as the climate crusader leader but gave China a treaty that allowed them to dramatically increase their carbon output and coal use until 2030 would've taken even longer to do anything about the virus coming out of China.
ReplyDeleteDon't confuse panache with process. No doubt his press conferences would've been far more dignified and his answers far more measured. But as for the outcomes? That's an entirely different thing.
