One of the regular participants was a professor at the Hebrew University, Robert J. (Yisrael) Aumann. Once a promising yeshiva student, he had eventually decided to pursue a career in academia, but made his weekly participation in Rav Gustman's shiur part of his schedule, along with many other more or less illustrious residents of Rechavia and Jerusalem.
The year was 1982. Once again, Israel was at war. Soldiers were mobilized, reserve units activated. Among those called to duty was a Reserves soldier, a university student who made his living as a high school teacher: Shlomo Aumann, Professor Yisrael Aumann's son. On the eve of the 19th of Sivan, in particularly fierce combat, Shlomo fell in battle.
Rav Gustman mobilized his yeshiva: All of his students joined him in performing the mitzvah of burying the dead. At the cemetery, Rav Gustman was agitated: He surveyed the rows of graves of the young men, soldiers who died defending the Land. On the way back from the cemetery, Rav Gustman turned to another passenger in the car and said, "They are all holy." Another passenger questioned the rabbi: "Even the non-religious soldiers?" Rav Gustman replied: "Every single one of them." He then turned to the driver and said, "Take me to Professor Aumann's home."
The family had just returned from the cemetery and would now begin the week of shiva -- mourning for their son, brother, husband and father. (Shlomo was married and had one child. His widow, Shlomit, gave birth to their second daughter shortly after he was killed.)
Rav Gustman entered and asked to sit next to Professor Aumann, who said: "Rabbi, I so appreciate your coming to the cemetery, but now is time for you to return to your Yeshiva." Rav Gustman spoke, first in Yiddish and then in Hebrew, so that all those assembled would understand:
"I am sure that you don't know this, but I had a son named Meir. He was a beautiful child. He was taken from my arms and executed. I escaped. I later bartered my child's shoes so that we would have food, but I was never able to eat the food -- I gave it away to others. My Meir is a kadosh -- he is holy -- he and all the six million who perished are holy."
Rav Gustman then added: "I will tell you what is transpiring now in the World of Truth in Gan Eden -- in Heaven. My Meir is welcoming your Shlomo into the minyan and is saying to him ‘I died because I am a Jew -- but I wasn't able to save anyone else. But you -- Shlomo, you died defending the Jewish People and the Land of Israel.' My Meir is a kadosh, he is holy -- but your Shlomo is a Shaliach Zibbur – a Cantor in that holy, heavenly minyan."
Rav Gustman continued: "I never had the opportunity to sit shiva for my Meir; let me sit here with you just a little longer."
Professor Aumann replied, "I thought I could never be comforted, but Rebbi, you have comforted me."
I heard a slightly different version from one of my sons who heard it from his yeshiva rebbe who said he was there when Rav Gustman spoke
he said that Rav Gustman said that his son had come to in a dream the night before urging his father to be menachem avel because he had been reincarnated as th son who had been killed in battle

a.$23,037.36 in January 1998. The 1997 QDRO \P 1 states: “The parties hereto seek this Order in conjunction with this Court's child support orders of July 22, 1994 and January 6, 1997 in that action pending in this Court at the above number.” The court's child support orders of July 22, 1994 were made retroactive to when I was still in NY.
b.Susan accepted from Judge Rigler's $10,000. Susan showed Judge Rigler a $10,000 check payable to Gerald Aranoff (will money from Bill Richardson). Judge Rigler gave that money to Susan. This was during the period 1994-1997 of the 100% freeze on my TIAA pension.
c.Susan accepts 55% of my TIAA pension.
3.Reasons for Granting the Petition
The trial and jail sentence of the late Judge Gerald Garson was just the tip of the iceberg of fraud etc in NYS civil courts. The Court granting me my petition will help root out fraud etc in NYS civil courts.

Similarly, there is no difference of opinion to be taken into account in the Mishnah
Kethuboth 77a:
“Mishnah. A man in whom bodily defects have arisen cannot be compelled to divorce [his wife]. R. Simeon B. Gamaliel said: this applies only to minor defects, but in respect of major defects [The nature of these is explained in the Gemara] he can be compelled to divorce her.”
She demands a divorce and her husband refuses. What could the judges do? The law is nothing, unless a major defect arose. This is against ORA, Agunah International, K-G support, Rabbi Rackman etc.

Yes, the wife who sues in a bet din for a divorce not only gets her divorce but also the (kethubah) money. My theory is that the money is the big fight. Don’t many say that the main obstacle in freeing an agunah is the money? The Agunah wants her freedom and the money. Who can blame her. B”H I never cared for money. Notice in my SCOTUS petition I attack the judge. This gets SCOTUS interest. I fight ORA, Agunah International, Rabbi Rackman, K-G, etc because angry women looking for money do trickery/fraud. ReplyDeleteMy Theory: Rabbi Eliezer Melamed says that the Jews in the desert didn’t do פרו ורבו the way they did in Egypt. The population was stagnant during the 40 years. Bad. Looks like their sin was not being busy with פרו ורבו the way they were in Egypt. This left them open to יצר הרע for the Moabite women. I say this is why the Bar Kochba revolt failed: these 24,000 should’ve been busy making babies, not war. Let God do the wars. Surely our Sages were deathly afraid of the Roman censors when they wrote Yevamoth 62b. The rabbis wrote that the 24,000 deaths was a plague from God their own fault and not the fault of the evil Romans. Follow, KA?

Abin said: All of them died a cruel death. What was it?-R. Nahman replied: Croup.25”
There is a claim in Jewish mysticism that these 24,000 Rabbi Akiva students were the reincarnation גלגול נשמות of the 24,000:
“While Israel was staying at Shittim, the people profaned themselves by whoring ויחל העם לזנות with the Moabite women” (Numbers 25:1)
“Those who died of the plague numbered twenty-four thousand.” (Numbers 25:9).

Reading Yevamoth 62b the citation of the 24,000 deaths of Rabbi Akiva’s students is to prove that one must try have children even in old age. We love Rabbi Akiva, the former chief rabbi of Bnei Brak in the Haggadah.

They take the Baraisa on Yevamoth 62a literally on the deaths of the 24,000. No, I say. Schottenstein states before the Baraisa: “The Baraisa records that Rabbi Akiva exemplified this principle himself” Schottenstein states right after the Baraisa: In summary: The Gamara discusses three distinct obligations upon a man related to taking a wife: (a) פריה ורביה... (b)...that a man is not permitted to remain single, regardless of the number of children he already has; (c)...a man should continue to father children even if he has fulfilled the mitzvah of procreation...a fourth obligation of inhabiting the world...”

My theory is that Mary Anastasia O’Grady analysis of Venezuela is similar to the situation our Sages who wrote the Bariasa in Kethuboth 66a. Our Sages faced the fearsome intelligence service of the Roman Empire who captured and jailed so many of our Sages. With the failure of the Bar Kochba revolt, the Roman Empire doubled down on repression. We were occupied by The Roam Empire who planted sleeper cells throughout the county.
What to do? Make babies. This is Rabbi Eliezer Melamed’s advice for us today. I love the Schottenstein summary on Yevamoth 92a:

I find it difficult to be sad during the days of ספירת העמר because I reject the falsehood that 24,000 Torah students died during the days of ספירת העמר and stopped dying on ל"ג בעומר. We mourn that the Roman Empire occupied us, imprisoned us, and killed us and that the Bar Kochba revolt failed. Thanks to Rabbi Akiva and Torah teaching saved us physically and spiritually. We’re alive today and witnessing the ingathering of the exiles and the economic, technological, and spiritual growth in Israel. For this we are grateful to God and declare a holiday and say Hallel. In Exile spiritual growth is declining to our sorrow. We should no longer mourn what the Roman Empire did to us with laws against marriages and haircuts. Yes I’m going against Rabbi Moshe Feinstein (1895-1986). We have today Rabbi Eliezer Melamed.

ReplyDeleteRav Moshe was also positive about the State, and Rav Shlomo Z Auerbach and rav Elyashiv were very excited about the declaration of the state being the beginning of the redemption or ingathering of the exiles. Rav Henkin also changed his view, and became a supporter, and Rav Isser Zalman Meltzer was a supproter and also a close friend to Rav Kook, as were the rest i've mentioned. SO mainstream were positive towards the state.

ReplyDeleteIn the year 5712 Rabbi Neriah (who founded the "Bnei Akiva" yeshivas) was alone with the Rebbe, and on his departure he told the CHR that he was alone.
ReplyDeleteHe asked the Rebbe why Chabad was not celebrating Independence Day.
The Rebbe replied that he was afraid to answer him, lest Rabbi N will fall from the chair.
Rabbi N turned to the Rebbe, who nevertheless wants to hear!
The Rebbe told him that the correct question is not why Chabad is not celebrating ... but why Chabad does not fast on this day!
Rabbi N. said that he knew that the Rebbe was very sharp on the subject of "Zionism" but did not describe it as being so strong.
The Rebbe continued while discussing the establishment of the state and had 2 proposals. One proposal was an independent state, a second suggestion that it be a member state of the Commonwealth Organization.
The Arabs announced that if it was a state in the Commonwealth of Nations they would be silent but if it was by declaring independence they would go to war!
The Rebbe continued: The heads of state decided that despite the threat of the Arabs, they wanted independence

that's a tall story - where is the evidence that Israel could have been part of the Commonwealth, and that the Arabs would not object to it? The Arabs even objected to "partititon", which gave half or more of the land to them.
