The House Armed Services Committee approved a measure Wednesday
requiring women to register for the military draft, a move that comes
just a few months after the Defense Department lifted all gender-based
restrictions on front-line combat units.
In a twist that presages
how contentious further debate may be, the author of the amendment
voted against his own measure. It passed the committee by a vote of
32-30.
Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., a former Marine who served three combat
tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, doesn’t support drafting women into
combat and he’s opposed to opening infantry and special operations
positions to women. He said he offered the measure to trigger a
discussion about how the Pentagon’s decision in December to rescind
gender restrictions on military service failed to consider whether the
exclusion on drafting women also should be lifted. [...]
Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., said she supported Hunter’s measure.
“I actually think if we want equality in this country, if we want women
to be treated precisely like men are treated and that they should not
be discriminated against, we should be willing to support a universal
conscription,” she said. [...]
Hunter’s amendment will be included in the defense policy bill that
authorizes the defense budget for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1.
The full House will take up the bill soon.
Be careful what you wish for you just might get it. Such a simple saying but such a powerful meaning.

ReplyDeleteThe idea of a Jewish woman under the control of anyone but her parents or husband is anti-Torah. A woman who registers for the army can be told to not only join the army during a war, but also can be told to do other work such as teaching in inner cities, as she is controlled by the government.
ReplyDeleteSuch a situation is anti-Torah, and the woman so controlled especially when she is controlled to circulate among men who are known to abuse women even in peacetime, face an anti-Torah and immoral situation. Such a problem should call out the entire Torah world, but instead, we have, I think, after a few days, two comments here plus my complaint.
Some say there will not be a war, but woman can be controlled without war. And who says there won't be wars? We have had many wars in the past, Viet Nam, Korea, Iraq, we are now shooting in Syria. Russia and China are constantly antagonizing America and threatening ships, etc.
Once a woman signs up or even if she does not sign up, she is not free as a Jewish woman is supposed to be. We are facing a situation where maybe some will feel like committing suicide, and some may actually do it. But who cares? Who has time for these things? Isn't Judaism under the control of the Agudah and they say it is forbidden to oppose gays and maybe they feel the same way about Orthodox women that it is forbidden to get involved with their difficulties. After all, the liberal politicians who give so much money to the Agudah may be offended. First things first. Money talks, that is how it works in the Agudah. They even made a saint out of the mamzer maker in Philadelphia.
