The thing with the internet is that if something becomes bad on either side, they can just delete their ‘news’ story. Say, a lot of people start to hate CNN for something they posted? It’s gone. Fox News posted something that got a massive negative reaction? Poof.

After the anti-vaxxer started loudly voicing his opinions against the vaccine, Mutzafi, who ordered all his followers to get the vaccine earlier this year, was seen shouting: “More than 6,500 people died, stop making things up. Go, get out of here, you’re crazy.”

In fact, the report’s authors concede, “a number of witnesses we spoke to informed us that all of this behavior led to a sense among staff members in the Executive Chamber that personal attention from the Governor, even if flirtatious … was not only normal, but to be valued.” This would seem to be exculpatory information of a kind—but a search across Google and Twitter suggests it’s been omitted almost entirely from the ensuing press coverage. Instead, these exculpatory testaments were somehow reconfigured by the report’s authors as evidence of Cuomo’s guilt. In the rush to axe Cuomo, media accounts appear to have wholly glossed over this discrepancy.

It has always been obvious to anyone paying attention that Cuomo is a mini-Trump. He has the same appetite for authoritarianism as the former president: during the pandemic he has drawn scrutiny for cancelling special elections, issuing executive orders and consolidating power. Like Trump he has nothing but disdain for his detractors, particularly if they happen to be more qualified than he is. The New York Times recently reported that nine top New York health officials have resigned during the pandemic, with many of them telling the Times that Cuomo had asked them to match their health guidance to his decisions. But who needs experts, eh? Not the all-knowing Cuomo. “When I say ‘experts’ in air quotes, it sounds like I’m saying I don’t really trust the experts,” Cuomo said of pandemic policies in a recent news conference. “Because I don’t.”

He had done nothing wrong, he insisted, and was going nowhere. “I do it with everyone!” he said of the allegations that he inappropriately touched state staffers. “Black and white, young and old, straight and LGBTQ, powerful people, friends, strangers, people who I meet on the street.”

Attitude toward Maimonides

Called upon, about 1238, for support by Solomon ben Abraham of Montpellier, who had been excommunicated by supporters of Maimonides, Nachmanides addressed a letter to the communities of Aragon, Navarre, and Castile, in which Solomon's adversaries were severely rebuked. However, the great respect he professed for Maimonides (though he did not share the latter's views), reinforced by innate gentleness of character, kept him from allying himself with the anti-Maimonist party and led him to assume the role of a conciliator.^[5]

In a letter addressed to the French rabbis, he draws attention to the virtues of Maimonides and holds that Maimonides' Mishneh Torah – his Code of Jewish Law – not only shows no leniency in interpreting prohibitions within Jewish law, but may even be seen as more stringent, which in Nachmanides' eyes was a positive factor. As to Maimonides' Guide for the Perplexed, Nachmanides stated that it was intended not for those of unshaken belief, but for those who had been led astray by the non-Jewish philosophical works of Aristotle and Galen. (Note that Nachmanides's analysis of the Guide is not the consensus view of modern scholars.) "If," he says, "you were of the opinion that it was your duty to denounce the Guide as heretical, why does a portion of your flock recede from the decision as if it regretted the step? Is it right in such important matters to act capriciously, to applaud the one to-day and the other tomorrow?"^[5]

To reconcile the two parties, Nachmanides proposed that the ban against the philosophical portion of Maimonides's Code of Jewish law should be revoked, but that the ban against the study of the Guide for the Perplexed, and against those who rejected allegorical interpretation of the Bible, should be maintained and even strengthened. This compromise, which might have ended the struggle, was rejected by both parties in spite of Nachmanides' authority.^[5]

When the *Maimonidean controversy broke out in *Montpellier in 1232, Naḥmanides attempted to find a compromise between the opposing camps, although he agreed with *Solomon b. Abraham of Montpellier and his followers in condemning the detrimental use which had been made of the works of Maimonides by the "philosophizers" to whom the study of secular sciences was a principal object. On the one hand, in the letters which he sent to the community leaders of Aragon, Navarre, and Castile, he sought to prevent them from taking measures against the extremists of Montpellier, while on the other hand, in his famous letter "Before I raise my voice, I err," he requested the rabbis of France that they annul the ḥerem which they had proclaimed against the writings of Maimonides. He argued that these were not intended for French Jewry, which was faithful to Jewish tradition, but for the Jews of the south (Provence and Spain), among whom philosophic culture had struck roots, with the objective of bringing them back to the path of the faithful. In order to avert a schism between the opposed communities and camps, he proposed a detailed program which would suit the varying conditions prevailing in France and Spain and would regulate the study of the various sciences according to the age of the students and the locality. Naḥmanides' program failed because the extremists in both camps gained the upper hand and he was isolated.

ועל הדרך הזה ועל הענין אשאל מפני כבודכם, אזין עד תבונתכם, אחרי הדברים והאמת, בראותי עצתכם הטהורה נסכמת, עדתכם הקדושה חותמת, כל ארץ צרפת רבנים ושרים, פנות שבטים, כלם הסכימו לנדות ולהחרים, כל איש אשר ידו ירים, להגות בספר מורה נבוכים וספר מדע, קרנו יגדע, עד אשר יגנזו גניזה עולמית. זה טופס דבריכם מעט מהרבה, וניצוץ מהמדורה הגדולה אשר לא תכבה.

ולמה קדושי עליון פרשתם לרב הקהילות רשת החרם, לקטוף עוללות ואשכול, להשחית את הכל. כי תתנו הארץ הזאת לבוז ולמשיסת רכושם, ולשאול באלה נפשם. ולא נתתם כבוד להרב הגדול, אשר בנה בתלמוד מגדול, מגדול עוז לשם ה', ומקדש להמוני, המון עם הארצות, העולים בפרצות. ובית תלמודנו השמם, שממות עולם יקומם. בכל גלות החל הזה בספרד ובארץ המערב, ואל המזרח ואל הצבי היה מושיע ורב. כמה נדחי אמונה קבץ, כמה בתי מדרשות רבץ, לכמה רעבי תושיה לחמו נתן מימיו נאמנים, וכמה אפיקרוסים ומגלי כנגד תלמודנו פנים השיב בדבריו הנבונים. ואם אתם בחיק אמונה אמונים, שתולים בחצרות הקבלה דשנים ורעננים, הלא תשימו לב ליושבי הקצוות, כי השיב לבצרון אסירי התקוות, ומוכרחי התאוות, השביעם באמונתינו ובקבלתינו נפשותם רוות, תחת אשר מלאו כריסם מהבלי היונים והאכילו בטנם הוות, ועלינו בפיהם היה חוטר גאוה, ילעיגו בשפה לנפשות הבוטחות ונשמות המקוות, יניעו ראש לתורה, כי אין טעם לעבירה, ואין ריח למצווה. בדברי תורתנו לא יעמיקו, ובילדי נכרים יספיקו. ולולי מדברי הרב ומפי ספריו חיו, ונפשם מדשן חכמתו ירויו, ובאהלו תעודתו ישליו, כמעט רגליהם נטיו. הלכם גאוני התלמוד הטריח עצמו, והוא כמוכרח ואנוס, לבנות ספר מפי פילוסופי יון שמה לנוס, לרחוק מעל אריסטו וגליאנוס. השמעתם דבריהם, אם טעיתם אחרי ראיותיהם. לא אליכם רבותינו, הביטו וראו אם יש מכאוב כמכאובינו, כי גלו בנים מעל שולחן אביהם, ויתגאלו בפת בג המלך וביין משתיהם, ויתערבו בגוים וילמדו ממעשיהם, אף כי חרב השמד, אשר בעוונותינו שרד, בגלות ירושלים אשר בספרד. והותר לקרובי מלכות ללמוד חכמה יוונית, להבין בחכמת הרפואה, לשער כל מדה ולדעת כל תכנית, ויתר החכמות ותחבולותם, להחיות נפשם בחצרות המלכים וטירותם. אף כי אלה חכמות מותרות, ורבותינו ז"ל הזהירונו בהן, וציוונו עליהן. וכאשר אבדו ספרי חכמותינו, באבדן מולדתנו, והוצרכנו ללמוד בהם מספרי היוונים, והעמים השונים, נמשכו הלבבות אחרי המינות, התחילו בשבח וסיימו בגנות. והנה שם הרב ספריו כתריס בפני פורענות, מגן הוא לחצי קשת בני יון, החוקקים חקקי און, להעלות הטובעים בבור שאונם מטיט היון.

והנראה לכם מן הספר ההוא בפרקיו וחלקיו, כי לקרב רחוקים נטה מן הקו. בעקבי הפילוסופיא יצא על דלתי חכמה נקש, קשה בעיניכם שדחה את אויביו בקש. ולמה פלילי צדק לא תתנו מחסום לפי סופריכם, ולא תשלחו רסן ענותכם על פני אמריכם, ללמד אתכם דבריכן, זונות מפרכסות זו את זו, תלמידי חכמים לא כל שכן, כי אמרתם באזנינו בגאוה ובוז מלין דלא נשמע, להם עין קהילתנו דמוע תדמע. הוצאתם עתק מפיכם, דברים הנראין לקנאה ושנאה נאמרין, אסור לשמעם, אף כי לכתבם, ומכל שכן לאמרם. שכתבתם ואמרתם על האיש הקדוש ההוא, אשר בכל גלות צרפת וספרד לא קם כמוהו, המורה יורה, מי כמוהו מורה, ובכל מיני חכמות בקי, משנתו קב ונקי. פערתם פה לבלי חוק, והעתרתם בדברים דנשמעים למרחוק, באמרכם על הגאון יש לנו גדול ממנו שנעשה צדוקי. הנה זאת לא צדקתם במענכם, לא דברתם נכונה בעבד ה', ואוכיחכם ואערכה לעיניכם, כי לא אשא פני איש, ולהשיב על זה אמהר ואחיש, ואל אדם לא אכנה, אל הגאון ומוראו אקנא. מדוע את הרב ממעשהו תפריעו, וצדיק כביר תרשיעו. הלא שאלתם עוברי דרך, המאריכים לשון המפליגים מליצה נושאים משל בערך, בתהלת הרב הגדול, במעלת חסידותו, בתוקף אמונתו, בעוצם ענוותו, בגדולת יחוסו, בנדבת כיסו, במעשיו הנפלאים, במיליו הנוראים, בהיותו ביראת אלהיו דבק וחושק, ובתלמודנו נושק, אוהב דברי חכמים ומחבקן, הם מחמד עיניו ומחמד לנפשו, עטרת לראשו. אם ראיתם ספריו, אם דקדקתם בחיבוריו, השמעתם אותו מבעט באיסורין, בקלין וחמורין, אם השמיט כל תקנה וגזירה, ולא עשה סייג לתורה, אם העליו עינים מעירובין וידים, אם שכח עומר בגורן, ועוף וגבינה הנאכלים באפיקורן, הלא החמיר בהן ויותר מן הדין. לא לכם רבותינו להקל ראש כנגד מזרח. מי הכה הצדוקים אשר היו כגבורים בוסים, מי נתן הבייתוסים לשוסים, הלא הרב ז"ל כי ה' עמו. והוביש רוכבי סוסים, והוציא אדיריהם מחצר מלך מצרים, מפחדו יגורו ומשאתו חרדים, ורבים מעמי הארץ מתיהדים, כי נפל פחד הרב עליהם, ונתחזק מוראו על כולהם.

והנני מעיד עלי לפני רבותי שמים וארץ, כי שמענו ממגידי אמת, שבכל ארצות מלכות תימן, קהלות רבות עוסקים בתורה ובמצוות לשמן, והיו מזכירים שם הרב בכל קדיש וקדיש "בחייכון וביומיכון ובחיי דרבנא משה בן מיימון", אשר האיר עיניהם בתורה, והעמידן בקרן אורה, לבטל מהן גזירות קשות וכובד המס, כי היו כטיט חוצות מרמס, ומעליהם עול הרים, ויחלו מעט ממשא מלך ושרים.

וקהלות האלה בשמעם את דברי האלה היוצאת הלא יפרקו עול המורא, ויגלו פנים בתורה, להתריס כנגד רבני צרפת ידברו, ואיש את רעהו יעזורו, לחזק מתנים ולאמץ כח על דברי הרב הגדול, וללומדי ספריו יקראו חזק, והברק כמראה הבזק, לחזק ידים ולהוסיף ישיבה עוד, ואמץ מאוד. ותעשה התורה כשתי תורות, וכל ישראל שתי חבורות. אלה ישפטו בעמק יהושפט, ואלו יבורו ונחו בנחלי הבתות, ושתה ישתו אשר אין משפטם לשתות, אלה יעמדו על גזירתכם, ואלה לא יחושו על מעלת תורתכם. והלא אפילו לאנשי ביתו של אדם, עבדיו ושפחותיו הכנענים, ציוו רבותינו ז"ל שלא להטיל אימה יתירה עליהם שמא יאכילוהו דבר איסור^[3]. ואפילו בשלושה דברים המוטלים חובה על הבית, הצריכו למימרינהו בניחותא, כי היכי דליקבלו מיניה^[4]. זהו קל וחומר שאין עליו תשובה, על אחת כמה וכמה להזהיר את הרבים וליסר קהלות גדולות, אשר בהם כמה חסידים וכמה חכמים שהכל חייבים בכבודם, הרבה משתים עשרה רבוא אדם, כל שכן וכל שכן שהיה צריך לבוא במטו ולייסר בנחת, ולואי שיהא בדור ראוי לקבל תוכחת, כי העזות פורחת, שובבה העם הזה משובה נצחת. ואם תגזרו דבר שלא יהיו מקובלים בחיבה, לא יחושו לחרם מניינכם ויאמרו לעיניכם אדרבה, ויהיה לרגלם רשת ולמכשול סיבה, ואין גוזרין גזירה על הציבור אלא אם כן רוב הציבור יכולין לעמוד בה, ולמה רבותי וגאוני, תבלעו את נחלת ה'.

והנה אנחנו קבלנו גזירתכם, ונזהר מחרב פיכם, עד תחקרון מילין ותשמעו אמרים נכוחים, כי אין סביבותינו פחים, אין בארצותינו, נודד כנף ומצפצץ כנגד קבלתינו, אין פרץ ואין יוצאת ואין צוחה ברחובותינו. ואמנם כי מבין ההרים, מרכבה יוצאת אשר בה הסוסים שחורים, וחרב המחלקות בתוכם חזיתי, מעלה עשן כנגדי ראיתי.

והנה הרב רבי שלמה, שם ישר נוכח עמו, כי ריב לחכם עם חביריו, ועם חכמי ארץ יתווכח. ואנחנו לא ידענו דבר מי יקום ממנו ומהם, ואמת שמענו את הרב הגדול מחזיק במדרשי רבותינו ז"ל ובהגדתן, שכל הדברים יהיו בהוויתן, בסעודה העתידה ביין המשומר ולויתן, בגיהנם וגינת ביתן, המחכה יראה, והמכחיש לא יזכה לראותן, ויגל כמים משפט וצדקה כנחל איתן.

ואתם רבותינו הקדושים, קובלים עליכם פרושים. אם באתם לגדור גדר ולהרים מדרכם מכשול ופוקה, יצא מפיכם צדקה, כי אולי ראיתם צורך השעה, להניח מקום לשלוח דברכם מהר, כאשר הראה אתכם בהר, הוא מגדל מונפיליי"ר המר והנמהר, למה כללתם אותנו עמהם, להכניס ארצנו בגזירת החרם והאלות ההם, ומה לנו ולהם, וגבול נתן ה' בינינו וביניהם. ואחרי שאין במקומינו מחלוקת ולא שוד ושבר בגבולנו, אין אחריות חרמכם עלינו.

והנה קהלתנו חסים על כבוד הרב הגדול ומקנאים לו קנאה גדולה, כבוד תורתו וחסידותו, ואת יקר תפארת גדולתו. לא מהיותנו פוסחים על שתי הסעיפים, לסור מני אורח רבותינו היפים, לפנות אל הבלי הפילוסופים. ואם יעלה על לב מקצתן מגזירתכם, ועל כן ספר המורה ירחיקו, ומבדר בעינייניו שפתותיו ידביקו, כי לבם כמחט סדקית, לא ידעו דרכיו ובנתיבותיו לא העמיקו, מה יאמרו לספר המדע, והמכתב מכתב אלהים אשר העתיקו, מפתח לספרי הרב ז"ל בתלמוד ומבוא לכל חיבוריו, סופר מצוות ה' עשה ולא תעשה, מלמד לתלמידים כבוד ומורא, בהלכות תלמוד תורה, יורה חטאים דרך בהלכות תשובה, בנחת ושובה, ובלי קושיות והוויות, מפיק מרגליות. כי לא מצינו דברי תשובה בתלמוד רק מפורדים ומפוזרים, בין ההלכות וההגדות בלי ברורים, ובכל חיבורי גאונים הראשונים והאחרונים, לא מצאנו אותם עניינים, דרושים לכל חפציהם ומזומנים, כאשר המה מפורשים ומבוארים בספר ההוא המלא בפנינים, המיוחס בספרים מבחוץ ומבפנים. ומחסדכם רבותינו הודיעונו מה לכם ולספר ההוא, כי תורה היא וללמוד אנו צריכים.

כי שמענו שאתם אומרים כי הוא כופר בדינה של גיהנם, מפני שאמר: "הנקמה שאין נקמה למעלה ממנה היא שתכרת הנפש ותאבד"^[5]. ואנכי הצעיר לא האמנתי לשמועה כי קראתם אחריו מלא, על פי הדברים האלה, שהרי רבותינו ז"ל באותו לשון אמרו בספרא: "לפי שהוא אומר כרת בכל מקום ואיני יודע מה הוא, כשהוא אומר והאבדתי את הנפש ההיא, למד על הכרת שאינו אלא אבדן"^[6]. וחס ושלום מלכפור, כי יש גיהנם ותפתה וכפור, וכל אדם בידו ידליק אורו ובורו יחפור, כי המכחש בזה קרע מעיל האמונה וכסות הקבלה בל יתפור, ויעשה אדם כדגי הים רמש וצפור. אבל אמת ואמונה ונכון וקיים, כי לאלהים יקידת נור בציון ואור לו בירושלים, תנור מעלה עשן, כקיטור הכבשן. וכך הוא בעיני אני הצעיר תלמידכם, שכל חייבי כריתות יורדין לגיהנם ונידונין בה שנים עשר חודש, נפשם כלה, מתוך דין שלה, ומתבטלת והולכת לה. וזה שאמרו רבותינו ז"ל: "לאחר שנים עשרה חודש גופן כלה ונשמתן נשרפת, ורוח מפזרתן תחת כפות רגלי הצדיקים"^[7], כלומר שמאותה שעה ואילך אינה במקום דין ולא במקום תענוג, אלא בטלה ואובדת. וזהו שאמרו ז"ל "אין כרת אלא אבדון". ונמצאו דברי הרב ז"ל קיימים שאמר "הנקמה שאין אחריה נקמה הוא האבדון", שהוא ודאי סוף הנקמה ותכליתה. וחלילה שלא כפר בדין הראשון שבתחלתה, שהרי הרב הגדול אומר כן באותן ההלכות "ונידונין על חטאותיהם" וכו'^[8], וזהו הדין בודאי במקום ההוא, ואותה קרא גיהנם או תפתה או עלוקה, שהוא על כל פנים מקום המשפט שמה הרשע, אשר שם שם אלהים לכלות הפשע, ולהתם חטת העוברים, מקום אשר אסירי המלך שמה אסורים, ועל כן אמר הרב הגדול ז"ל נידונין כפי רשעם, ואחר כך יש להם זכות וחלק לעולם הבא, אלמא אית דין ואית דיין, נושא בחשבון ונותן במנין, מוריד ומעלה הורס ומקיים הבנין. וכן פירש הרב ז"ל באחרים "ונידונין כפי גודל רשעם וחטאתם, לעולם ולעולמי עולמים, כגון המינין והאפיקורסין", הרי שהפריש הרב ז"ל בין חייבי כריתות ובין הנידונין לעולמים, לפי שאלו אובדין ואלו נידונין לעולמים, כי תולעתם לא תמות ואשם לא תכבה. ואמת שלא (ראית) [ראינו] בכל דברי הרב זכר לשנים עשר חודש שהזכירו במסכת ראש השנה ובמקומות אחרים, ונראה לי שהוא ז"ל סבר דלא דווקא קצבה נקט, שאין שוה דין החייב כרת אחד, לחייב שלושים ושש כריתות, אלא סימנא בעלמא הוא, ומאן סליק לעילא ואמר דדוקא הוא, זהו דעת הרב ז"ל. ובוודאי מתניתין דמסכת עדיות הויא תיובתא, מכל מקום המפרש כן, אם אמת ואם שקר, לא כפר ברבותינו ולא פקר, אבל בין טוב לרע כפי דעתו ביקר, איזן וחיקר. ומה שלא הזכיר הרב דרכי גיהנם, מפני שהוא אצלו מן הדברים המופתיים בהעלם עניינם, והוא תופס דרכי התורה, בביאור הדברים המתבארים בהכרח וראיה גמורה, זו היא דעתנו בדברי הספר הזה ברורה, לכן נשאנוהו על כתפים, ושמנוהו בים העיניים, ולא דחינו ככם כבשתי ידים.

וכבר ראו כל בני לוני"ל והרב הגדול ר' אברהם בר' דוד ז"ל הספר ההוא, ולא צוו לגונזו, ולא קראו אחריו תגר, ואין אחד מהם על לומדיו חרבו חוגר, אבל כלם אוו לו, וחזו בו, ופתחו ואין סוגר. והרב רבי אברהם ב"ר דוד ז"ל השיב על מקצת דבריו, ולא אמר שיש בו קצת מינות וצד כפירה חס וחלילה. וראיתי לרבינו הצרפתי ז"ל בתשובותיו במצות הנוהגות עתה בארץ ישראל, שהגיעו ספרי הרב הגדול לידו, והיה מתברך בהם, ומביא ראיות מדברי הספרים ההם, בשפה ברורה ובלשון מהודרת, ומזכיר שם הרב לשם ולתפארת.

ואחרים שמעתי אומרים, שאתם תופשים על ספר המדע באמרו שאין למעלה צורה ותבנית^[9]. ולמה רבותינו תפשתם עליו בדבר הזה, שהרי כל הגאונים בחיבוריהם. וכל חכמינו הקדמונים בפיוטיהם, בספרד ובבבל, יחשבו הנוטה מזה כהולך אחרי ההבל, וקראו הסובר חלוף נרגן מפריד אלוף, ודבר זה כתוב בתורה ושנוי בנביאים ומשולש בכתובים, ומפורש בהגדות ובמדרשים הנעימים והנאהבים, כי עילת כל העילת, יתברך על כל ברכות ותהלות, אין לתארו בגשם ותבנית, ולא ישיגוהו גבולות, ואיכה מקום וגבול יתארהו, והנה השמים ושמי השמים לא יכלכלהו. ואמנם כי קצת ההגדות הטהורות, יבקעו יאורים בצורות, ולהן סנסנים ופארות, עושים פירות ופירי פירות, וסודם כאשר יבחן, ינעם ליודעים חן. סוף דבר הכל נשמע, כי על זאת האמונה אומתינו אומנה, גם לחכמי צרפת אשר אמרתם צרופה, דעתם יפה, מצאנו שכתבו כן בחיבוריהם. וכן ראיתי בחיבור הרב החסיד רבי w:אליעזר מגרמיזא ז"ל, בספר גדול שחיבר, והגיע לידי ממנו, "שער הסוד והיחוד והאמונה", וכתוב בו בלשון הזה: "ומהו ה' אחד, אחד כל אשר בו, אין קצה לחכמתו, אין חקר לתבונתו, וליכולתו אין קצה, וליסודו אין לו התחלה ולא סוף, יוצר הכל, ויודע הכל אמת. אין לו פנים ולא אחור וגובה, כי אין קץ ותכלית לכל אשר יש בו. ואין לו גבול ולא אברים לבורא העולמים. ומה שכתוב בקראים עניינים גשמים, ולא נכתבו כי אם להבין לבני אדם. וכבר הזהירנו בתורתינו, שלא נחשוב עליו דמות וצורה, דכתיב ונשמרתם מאוד לנפשותיכם כי לא ראיתם כל תמונה". וכתב: "תמונה בגימטריא פרצוף אדם", "ומה שכתב נעשה אדם בצלמינו כדמותינו, לא שיש לבורא דמות וצלם בריותיו, אלא בצלמינו שאנו חפיצים להתראות לנביאים, פרצוף החמוד הוא פני אדם, דמיון הנראה לנו מכובד ויקר, זהו בצלמינו כמכובד בעיניו, בצלם שמלאכי השרת נראין בו, זהו בדמותינו, על דרך היקר והכבוד שחפץ באדם, כן פירש רבינו סעדיה הגאון ז"ל. וכל הסובר על הבורא יוצר הכל שיש לו צלם ודמות ואברים, אין לו אלוה כלל. תראה המתרגם "פי ה'" – מימרא דה'; "בעיני ה'" – קדם ה', זהו לשונו ואלו דבריו. ועוד אמרו רז"ל באמת ובשבועה שאין ליוצר הכל ית"ש לא דמות ולא צורה, ובזה היו אבותינו הקדושים מאמינים. וכל מה שכתוב בשיר השירים "ראשו כתם פז, קוצותיו תלתלים" – אינו אלא משל. תראה במדרש חזית" וכו'", עד "וכל הרבנים ורבינו חננאל ורבינו נסים ורבינו נתן ידעו וכתבו שאין דמות וגשם לבורא ית"ש, וקללו המאמינים בזה, ואברהם אבינו ע"ה הבין וידע זה, על כן אני אומר באמת שהמאמין באלהותו יבין שכמו שאין אברים לנשמה שיוצאת מכסא קדשו, כך אין לבורא ב"ה גוף וצורה ודמות כלל, המאמין אשריו, ומי שלא ידון באש לא נופח, כי הבורא היות בכל וקרוב לגוף יותר מן הנשמה לגוף ואין דמיון לו ב"ה".

ועוד כתב בזה השער זה לשונו: "וכשהנביא יודע שרואה בכבוד כפי רצון הבורא באור האור, ואמר אראה את ה', כי את המלך ה' צבאות ראו עיני, לפי שידע חפץ הבורא במראה הנבואה, וזהו ביד הנביאים אדמה, כפי שכלו המועט ומדעו מלמד לאדם דעת, לא יהיה כוונתם בדבר הנראה לעין מלאכים או לעין נביאים לקרותו אל, כי אם ביוצר הכל, אשר אין לו דמות ואין לו קץ, הוא בהויתו וביחודו בתוך לעולם, ואין מחיצות ורקיעים והארצות והימים מקיפים אותו ולא נודעים ממנו, וזהו "ואתם עדי נאום ה' ואני אל", תדע בשכל מדע לבבך ותדע ותשכיל כי בורא עולם אין לו קץ וגבול וסוף וקנין, לא קימה ולא ישיבה, לא הליכה ולא עמידה, לא עליה ולא ירידה, אך כפי חפץ רצונו מראה כבודו וסודו לנביאים. זהו שאמר כי אם גלה סודו אל עבדיו הנביאים". ועוד אמר וזה לשונו: "ומה שאמר בספר הקומה אמר רבי ישמעאל: אני ועקיבא עריבים בדבר זה" – זהו שיעור הכבוד הנראה והבורא המנהיג והממלא כל העולמים לא אכרע ואשתחוה, וכבודו הוא אמונתי ואליו בקשתי, וזהו "ושכינת עוזו בגבהי מרומים", הוא אלהינו הבורא, וזו היא האמונה הנאמנה, "ה' אלהינו ה' אחד", הצדיקים רואים פני השכינה כנגדם, כי יראו איך ממלא הכל וימשוך רוחם אליו, וכשהם עולים נשרפים באש שלפני הכסא הכבוד, ואחר כך הם מונחים בצרור החיים ושם נהנים מזיו השכינה". כל זה כתב הרב החסיד ז"ל.

וידעתי כי הספר ההוא מצוי אצלכם. ועוד בו האריך, אבל לקצר אני צריך, כי האלוהים יודע בהעלותי דברים אלו על ספר, ארכובתי דא לדא נקשן, ולבבי ורעיוני נעים, כנוע עצי יער מפני רוח גדולה וחזקה, מפרק הרים ומשבר סלעים. אמנם מחשבותי צופיות לפתח שכל העינים תלויות, ממנו אדרוש סליחתי וכפרתי, כי עת לעשות לשמו הפרו תורתו. ואנחנו תמהים עליכם בני האלהים, כי ראינו שלא הסכמת עם הרב בעקרי האמונות, וציויתם לגנוז ספריו באגרות הראשונות, ובשמעונו דברים בצפייתנו צפינו, להגיח ירדן קבלתכם אל פינו, ולא נטה מן הדרך ימין ושמאל. ועתה התודה השנית ההולכת למואל, ומקצת שריכם ורבניכם אחריה, והם כתובים על הגזירה הראשונה וחוזרים בדבריה, מה ראו ועשו, מי פייסם ונתפייסו, וכי משוא פנים יש בדבר, שמועין דבריו של זה היום ולכשיבוא חבירו למחר שומעין דבריו, והלא אין דינינו אלא בעיקרי הקבלה. לכן רבותי, שימו דעתיכם להיות בהסכמה, ותהי לכן לחכמה, כי עיני כל ישראל עליכם, לקחת קל וחומר ממכם, להודיע דעתכם לציבור, הראוי ברמז – ברמז, הראוי בדיבור – בדיבור, והראוי לחכם – לחכם, והראוי לבור – לבור, פן תצא דבריכם במחלוקת, ותרעו ותשחיתו בכל הר קדשינו, פן תקע נפשינו משלשלת הקבלה, והשרשרת תנתק, וחבל הכסף ירתק, כי יבררו רבים דרך לעצמן, כי תביאו בלבבם מורך, נשקו בר פן יאנף ותאבדו דרך. ועתה רבותינו הגדולים, המגדלים והפינות ושרי המדינות, יחזור לבם על הראשונות, וכל שכן על האחרונות, וידעו תדעו באמת ובבירור, כי לא ישמעו הקהילות לחרם ומרור, ופני כלם קבצו פארור, בגזירתכם לגנוז ספרי הרב הגדול לעזוב כל איש מאוויו, והפורש מהם כפורש מחייו, כי בהם ילמדו, ובהם יעלו וירדו, ועל מי יסודות תורתו, וספרי חמדתו, יקח מהם עמדתו.

ואל חברי הרב החסיד ר' שלמה מברצילוני, שלומכם כנהר הטו, ותצוו עליכם בבקשה ובמטו, לירא את מוראו, להזהר בכבודו, ולהזדרז ולשמוע בתוכחתו, להזהר מגחלתו, להחזיק בדתו, וללמד תורתו, היקרה מפנינים, ולסבול פצעיו הנאמנים. כי שמענו בבעלי המחלוקת , המבעטים בכבודו, ופורקים במוראו, חללו בקודש חמסו תורה, ועליכם רבותינו המצוה הזאת, כי תלבישו קנאות ותצבאו צבאות, שרי אלפים ושרי מאות, לבא באדירים, לעזרת ה' בגיבורים, עד אשר אימת הרב עליהם, כי ככפיר ינהם, ולא יעמדו אליו בגובהם, והוא גם הוא ישמע למוסרכם, ויזהר בכבודכם, ויהא מקבל בשמחה את כל האדם, למען תהיה מחלקתו עם חכמי עירו כמחלוקת בית שמאי עם בית הלל הנוהגים אהבה וריעות זה בזה, לקיים מה שנאמר "האמת והשלום אהבו"^[12]. וצור ישראל יכתת חניתותיהם למזמרות, לאיתים חרבותם, והשיב לב אבות על בנים ולב בנים על אבותם.

Disgraced cult leader Eliezer Berland hospitalized with coronavirus

 Eliezer Berland, the disgraced leader of the Shuvu Banim community, has contracted coronavirus and has been hospitalized at Hadassah Ein Keren hospital in Jerusalem on oxygen support. Berland is 83 years old.

In June of this year, after a long-drawn-out legal process, Berland was convicted of serious offences and sentenced to 18 months in prison. He was later transferred to an undisclosed location, after his followers persisted in congregating outside the various places where he was being held and causing disturbances in the local community.

Berland was also fined the sum of NIS 2,415,000 ($743,250) and ordered to pay compensation to the victims of his crimes, which included fraud, attempted intimidation, tax offenses, and money laundering.
