While they believe that the physical threat from the health risk is
manageable, the spiritual and communal risk of the Internet is
existential. Indeed, the COVID crisis has exposed deepening cracks in
the walled garden, so fundamental to haredi society. There has been a
major increase on the Internet connectivity for haredim since the
beginning of the COVID pandemic, leading to ever greater concerns from
the leadership about how to protect their flock from outside and, in
their perspective, wholly destructive influences.
Do they stop being haredi when this happens?

ReplyDeleteA few years ago in one of the Israeli newspapers it had an article about the different dress styles of hareidim in Israel. They also have a spectrum of how frum, how modern, how anti Zionist they are. There are even cool hareidim who blend designer items into their dress code. I suppose the type of phone they use also has connotations.
ReplyDeleteI was walking in Stamford Hill with a non-Jewish friend decades ago and he commented on the outfits and asked why everyone dressed the same. So I said "Oh no, some have thin brims, some have thick brims, some have the brims up, some down..."

BTW , one should not attack hareidi people, or other Torah observant jews. I argue against some arguments or positions found in some haredi groups. But the communities are righteous. I sometimes what they make of my modern dress code. Jeans. Leather jacket. ...
