ReplyDeleteHaEmes. We regret to inform you of the petirah of HaGaon HaMekubal Rav Sender
Erlanger zatzal, who was niftar on Thursday afternoon. Rav Sender
stood-up fearlessly against breaches in Yiddishkeit, and spoke-out with the
undiluted truth. For the past few years he was suffering excruciating yissurim.
He reportedly accepted the yissurim upon himself, in order to annul the gezeiros
that befell Chareidi Jewry.
It is interesting
to note that Thursday the 18th of Shevat marked 99 years since the petirah
of the Chafetz Chaim’s son-in-law HaGaon HaTzadik Rav Hirsh Levenson zatzal
who was niftar at a young age. His wife asked her father, “Couldn’t
HaKadosh Baruch Hu have chosen someone else to take away other than my Hirsh?” The
Chafetz Chaim famously answered, “There was a gezeirah for half the
world to be destroyed, and instead Hashem took Rav Hirsh.”
In a drashah
four years ago, Rav Sender said; “At the time when Gedolei Yisroel declared
National Service to be under the issur of yehareig v’al ya’avor,
Rosh HaShanah arrived, and Yom Kippor approached, and yet the annulling of the gezeirah
was unsuccessful. What was left to do? Gedolei Yisroel determined that Yom
Kippor night before Maariv it would be announced in all the shuls that
Sheirut Leumi is yehareig v’al ya’avor, literally. With the intention that
when Klal Yisroel would loudly scream; “Shma Yisroel Hashem Elokeinu Hashem
Echod and Baruch Shem Kevod Malchuso Leolam Vaed”, it will be with the
understanding that [not complying] with the gezeirah, is literally yehareig
v’al ya’avor. And this is what annulled the gezeirah [from having
any practical effect]. This is the strength of Klal Yisroel, nitzchiyus,
netzach Yisroel lo yishaker. It is forbidden to assert that there [no
longer] exists the strength of mesiras nefesh in Klal Yisroel.”
This was the driving
spirit of Rav Sender; Kabbalas Ol Malchus Shamayim with the intent of mesiras
nefesh kepshuto, should it be demanded of him. And when it was, he properly
fulfilled the summons, and battled for Kovod Shamayim until his last breath. Yehi
zichro baruch.
