Vayeitzei; Can a Younger Sibling Marry First, or Was Lavan Correct?

Guest Post by Rabbi Shlomo Pollak

Lavan sanctimoniously proclaimed, AFTER Yaakov worked SEVEN years for Rochel, לא יעשה כן במקומינו לתת הצעירה לפני הבכירה- "It's improper to marry off a younger child, before the older one"...

Lavan is "quoted" by Rishonim, and Poskim....

So, do we agree, in principle, with Lavan, and if yes Why? and When?

  1. It wasn't AFTER seven years, but after committing to work seven years.

Also, is the case different if they are twins? (Issue of sisters notwithstanding.)

If the sisters don't mind (talking about waiting)

  2. The first seven years, Yaakov worked, under an "agreement" with Lavan that he will marry Rochel.

After the wedding, which turned out to be to לאה, he married Rochel with a commitment to work another seven years.
