Jesus & Shabsai Tzvi fell from high levels of holiness to sin - through pride and anger

Shivchei haBesht(#66) Rabbi Joel told me… that Shabbtai Zvi came to the Besht to ask for redemption. Rabbi Joel said in these words: “The tikkun is done through the connection of soul with soul, spirit with spirit and breath with breath” The Besht began to establish the connection moderately. He was afraid as Shabbtai Zvi was a terribly wicked man. Once the Besht was asleep and Shabbtai Zvi may his name be blotted out, came and attempted to tempt him again, G-d forbid. With a mighty thrust the Besht hurled him to the bottom of hell. The Besht peered down and saw that he landed on the same pallet with Yeshu. Rabbi Joel said that the Besht said that Shabbetai Tzevi had a spark of holiness in him but that Satan caught him in his snare, G‑d forbid. The Besht heard that his fall came through pride and anger. I was reluctant to write it down, but nevertheless I did so to show to what exent pride can be dangerous. [in Praise of Baal Shem page 86-87

Rav Tzadok (Machavos Charutz #1):...Therefore the Torah has to command us "Be Holy" You might mistakenly think that means as holy as G-d...[See Vayikra Rabba 24:9]. When a person has reached perfection in holiness until he is comparable to the angels through his free will - the Yetzer HaRah does not leave him alone ever and seduces him with the thought that he can be as holy as G-d literally (mamash). Because of this a person can fall from the greatest heights to the lowest depths c.v. This is in fact what happened to Jesus and Shabsai Tzvi - the name of the wicked should rot. Because of their excessive asceticism their imaginative faculty grew and they thought that they could compare themselves to G-d. This all came about because they saw themselves as holy people....

  1. WADR, you're using a horrible translation.

"Rabbi Joel said in these words: 'The tikkun is done through the connection of soul with soul, spirit with spirit and breath with breath'."

R' Yoel is paraphrasing something from the Zohar on Acharei Mos. "The various components of the
Tzaddik are all inter-connected, nefesh with ruach and ruach with neshamah; and the neshamah is connected with the Holy One (blessed by He) so that [even] the nefesh is bound up in the Bond of Life."

The translation should reflect the intended notion that he is describing sheleimus, a wholeness of the soul "bekhol levavekha -- with all of one's desires" (to paraphrase Chazal).

  3. Regarding using the name Jesus. Would appreciate any source which says it is prohibited. In fact Rambam (Hilchos Melachim 11:4):
    רמב"ם הלכות מלכים יא

אף ישוע הנצרי שדמה שיהיה משיח ונהרג בבית דין, כבר נתנבא בו דניאל שנאמר ובני פריצי עמך ינשאו להעמיד חזון ונכשלו.

  4. Does it make a difference that the Rambam was speaking of a historical figure around whom the mythos collected rather than one of the "persons" of the trinity?

  5. From what I've seen and been told, it's not technically forbidden. However, 1900 years of being tortured, forcibly converted, ransacked and murdered in his name might have made use a little gun-shy about saying it, eh?

Another consideration is what his real name is. Mary was originally Miriam and some history books I've read suggest his name was Yehoshua which more closely correlated with the Greek name in common usage today. If that's that case, Yeshua, which is roshei teivos for yimach shmo v'damo, used by the Rambam makes perfect sense.

  6. The darke teshuvah (I am not near seforim so you can look it up-it is based on the posuk "veshem elokim acheroim lo yishoma al picha") in hilchos AZ brings a heter from the biur hageroh as follows. One is allowed to use the name of a person who became an Avodah Zoroh if that is not the name of AZ but a proper name. this is why earlier writings did call him Y. Of course, the geroh still calls him "oso hoish". The rambam probably did not read the new testimant nor did he know Christianity. The Ragachover says that he did not read sifrei AZ. What he did read were obsolete religions.

But, I saw beferush in a book shown by a catholic that the name is more than just a proper name. it is a holy name. as such it should be AZ. I suspect that the geroh and others were not aware of this. I discussed this with poskim and they were maskim "if" what I say is true.

I meant this as a heoroh and it is up to you what you do with it. To me, it makes sense to asser and call him "oso hoish". As I said, even the geroh called him that with his heter. I have heard other names, as you know.

  7. "Yeishua" is Aramaic for "Yehoshua". "Yemach shemo vezikhro" is a folk etymology. See Ezra 2:2, there was a Yeishua among those who returned from Bavel with Zerubavel, Nechemiah, Mordechai, etc...

We didn't replace his name with a derogatory nickname, and calling him "Yehoshua" would be like calling Rabbi Aqiva "R' Yaaqov". Or perhaps like calling R' Yosef Ber Soloveitchik "R' Yosef Dov", which actually is done.

  8. See Gero Yoreh Deah 147:3. He creates a criteria to determine the issue - "aval shem hedyodos af al pi sheasuhu elokah kivan shebazeh hashem ein bo elokus veadnus vegam ..." - kalanda- He then finishes off the heter of "oso hoish". He assumes it is merely his given name and no more.

I was shown in the official book put out by the Vatican that says the name has become after the crucification a holy name and there are issurim to say it in vain etc. many of their halochos are built on the divine name. The name itself is elokus.

I do not blame the Geroh and even Rambam for not knowing the details of their religion. But, bemichelas kevodom they ruled correctly on the information they had. I found out because I asked. As I said, I discussed it with a few poskim who concurred with my point. It is trivial.

I am not telling anyone what to do. You will not find a reference because (a) who is looking for a heter (b) it is not known by the general public of poskim. Just made a suggestion. And, as pointed out after 1900 years of suffering and the renewed negative attitude by the new Pope who undid his predecessor, it is not a mitzvah to give him so much kovod. Sorry, for my emotional feelings.

I don't know what "ploni almoni" is trying to say. The Gra's criteria are perfectly applicable to Jesus. That was his name (rather, that is a Latin version of his name) before he became an avodah zara. The Vatican's great esteem for the name of their god is not a chiddush and not relevant.

  12. Dr. Eidensohn/daas torah I have a question for you: After you have spent so much time earlier quoting source that negated and devalued Chasidism, such as your famous citation from the Klausenburger Rebbe that latter day rebbelach are like headless floundering fish, and dwelling as you did on the GRA's opposition to the Baal Shem Tov and all Chasidim, so then, is it not rather odd and hypocritical of you to quote sources that cite the Baal Shem Tov and the sayings of Chasidic masters that explain and knock down the places of Yoshke and Shabtai Tzvi in the eyes of Yiddishkeit?

After all, since you have proven beyond any shadow of a doubt that you are a die-hard misnaged who opposes Chasidism through and through for many well-sourced reasons that you have provided, so how can you then turn around and, as if you assume we have amnesia, spout the sayings of the Baal Shem Tov himself as definitive slapdownds of Yoshke and Shabtai Tzvi, and why have you not searched for sources in the GRA and among non-Chasidish seforim to prove the same points you were making?

If you assume that the Baal Shem Tov and Rav Tzadok are reliable and respectable then you also need to assume that their modern-day heirs in the Chasidish world are entitled to THEIR interpretation and practices of the Baal Shem Tov's notions and innovations, namely the stress on the role of the Tzadik in the lives of his Chasidim. The TANYA is the central ideological source book for ALL Chasidism, while there are variances, the TANYA in nistar and the Shulchan Oreuch Harav in nigleh are the hashkafic/halachik/mekubaldikke iron sources that divide ALL Chasidim from the non-Chasidim. Take it or leave it, by why flog a dead horse? While you are a capable writer, you are incapable of rewriting Jewish history!

It is intellectual chutzpah on your part to cite the master of the Chasidim to slap down Chabad who practice what the Baal Shem Tov preached to the n-th degree albeit in a way that is not comprehensible nor palatable to non-Chasidim. Chasidim and Chabad adore and in some ways "worship" the Baal Shem Tov and their Rebbes down to the rebbelach of our own times (if it is repugnant to you, worship your own gedolim, starting with the two Ree Moishes you admire: Feinstein and Shternbuch), so that to cite the words of the original Chasidic masters in essense and in the context of the flow of your posts, against themselves, makes no sense and is both highly disingenuous and no doubt quite offensive to a Chasid, not to mention it is a logical fallacy to take for oneself SELECTIVE teachings and imply them to be axioms strong enough to negate an entire CHASIDIC movement, that swears allegiance to the Baal Shem Tov and has certain kabbalas from him that noone else has (attributed to Rav Hutner when questioned why he chose to learn from the sixth Rebbe), like Chabad.

It is time for you to let go of the anti-Chabad bone that you have bled dry, you are no longer convincing anyone as you insist on fighting lost wars that have no real meaning because everyone has chosen their teams and like it or not are cheering them on, no matter what you or others say.

  13. to lazera,

It is not only esteem. I have seen the book. You have not. The name is now mekudash and has adnus and elokus which was created at his death. it is in their book. It is now more than his given name. There are other teshuvos that are very machmir. Even the English date has been a cause for debate. To them he was there at the beginning before he was born.

"It is not only esteem. I have seen the book. You have not. The name is now mekudash and has adnus and elokus which was created at his death."

Firt of all, being that you have not identified the book, we have no way of knowing whether or not I have seen it, nor can we know if you understood it correctly.

Regardless, according the offical Catechism of the Catholic Church (published in 1994) the name of Jesus is indeed considered one of the "names of God".

Moreover, this idea, that the name of Jesus has inherent holiness, is well established in Christian thought (it was a frequent topic of discourse of St. Bernard of Clairvaux in the eleventh century).

Nevertheless, it is all irrelevant to the halacha according to the Gra. The problem here, ploni, is that you are misunderstanding the Gra. You appear to be interpreting the Gra as saying that only if the name was NEVER given Divine status does it remain permitted. This is not what the Gra said.

The Gra said that only of the name was initially given for the purpose of avoda zara does the name become forbidden. In a case where the name was an ordinary name with no inherent idolatrous meaning and was not given for idolatrous purposes, then the name remains permitted, regardless of the later attitudes of the idolators towrds that name.

(For example, if a modern cult would arise that worshipped President Reagan and declared his name to be the Divine Name that may not be said in vain, this would not change the halachic status of the name Ronald Reagan.)

Being that there is no reason to believe that Jesus was given his name as a baby for the purpose of idolatry, the name is not (according to the Gra) forbidden.

  15. I did not misunderstand. The geroh say "vegam". There are two requirements.

Their shitah is that Gd (one of him) came down and the name that he was given as a baby was then attached to that deity after his death. It is not the man who they worship. It is a Gd. He was a man Gd.

When we see poskim saying that they agree with an creator but..this is a misunderstanding. There are 3 bore olom.

Look this is the last comment I will make. The choice is yours. I also pointed out that many poskim are against even saying the year. The geroh is one shitah. The name gesundheit made an issue. It is whether it started off as a GD-see darke teshuvah. They have decided that he was always around like Gezuntheit may ahve been. If you want to be mechabed Yoshke that is your choice.

I did not just wake up with this idea. as i said, many have agreed with me. Choose what you want.

  16. Part of the problem is whether the term Yeshu is referring to the historical figure described in the Talmud or whether it is an abbreviation for yemach shemo v'zichro [doubtful].Jesus is the Greek form of Yehoshua while Yeshu is a name that does not appear prior to the Talmud.See Wikipedia

"I did not misunderstand. The geroh say "vegam". There are two requirements."

The Gra gives one case where an idolatrous name is forbidden, שאין אסור אלא שם שניתן לה לשם אלקות - "that it is not forbidden except a name that was given for purpose of deity."

He then describes a case where a name does not fit this description:
אבל שם הדיוטות אע"פ שעשאוהו אלוה כיון שבזה השם אין בו אלהות ואדנות וגם לא ניתן לו לשם כך מותר
"But an ordinary name, even though they made it into a god, since there is no divinity and mastery in this name and it was not given to him for this purpose, is permitted."
Ok. Jesus/Yeshu/Yeshua/Yehoshua are all "ordinary names" with no inherent implications of deity and the name was not given to him for the purpose of deification. Only later, arguably well after his death, did the followers of Christianity ascribe deity to Jesus and begin to consider his name to be divine.

Thus, the Gra's application of his psak to Jesus is perfectly accurate. Your assumption that the Gra was too ignorant of Christianity to issue a correct psak is both arrogant and foolish.

"Their shitah is that Gd (one of him) came down and the name that he was given as a baby was then attached to that deity after his death."

"after his death" - Yes, which is precisely why the Gra's psak is accurate.

"It is not the man who they worship. It is a Gd. He was a man Gd."

Your descriptions of Christian belief are confused.

Mainstream Christian theology sees Jesus as both "True God" and "True Man." This paradoxical concept has been the sources of great controversy in Christian history, spawning numerous heresies.

Regardless, the name Jesus originated with a specific ordinary human being who was named as a baby. There is no reason to ascribe any unique status to the name Jesus unless you are a Christian.

"When we see poskim saying that they agree with an creator but..this is a misunderstanding. There are 3 bore olom."

It is deeply disturbing to me to see you accusing major poskim of ignorance based on your clearly amateurish understanding of Christianity.

To describe the Christian concept of the trinity in simple terms of multiple gods or "3 bore olom" is simply wrong. Such a belief would be considered outright heresy according to mainstream Christianity.

"...If you want to be mechabed Yoshke that is your choice."

I fail to see how using his name constitutes honoring him. We use the name of numerous reshaim from history (Haman, Nevuchadnetzar, Titus, etc.) without hesitation. Why is Jesus special?

I would point out that Yoshke is a traditional Yiddish nickname for Yehoshua, and is probably no different from using the name Jesus (the Latin version of the name Yehoshua).
