"America suffers from the same rates of mental illness as any other industrial country, yet we are the only one that wakes up to this horrific news every day, and it's because of our uniquely easy access to firearms," Brown told Newsweek in an email. "Gun violence is now the number one killer of our children. There is a reason why mass shootings in the U.S. skyrocketed after Congress refused to renew the assault weapons ban."

Africa is splitting into two as new ocean forms, researchers say

Currently-landlocked countries in Africa, such as Ethiopia, Uganda and more will see the introduction of a coastline – expanding possibilities for trade and production. Further, the split would lead to the emergence of a new ocean.

While the splitting of the African continent and the subsequent ocean that would arise holds an abundance of possibilities, the continent will not completely split for another 5 to 10 million years, according to researchers.

On Tuesday, the Human Rights Campaign referred Newsweek to their initial statement on the shooting, which reads: "We still don't know all the facts about what happened in Nashville. We do know that every study available shows that transgender and non-binary people are much more likely to be the victims of violence, rather than the perpetrators of it."

"Regardless of the reason for this shooting, the use of violence is reprehensible and we renew our call for common-sense gun safety legislation," the statement said.

Republican Honestly States GOP Plan for School Shootings: ‘We’re Not Going to Fix It’

 https://news.yahoo.com/republican-honestly-states-gop-plan-164357069.html

The Republican Party refuses to support meaningful gun control measures, which means they’re forced to trot out what seem like increasingly ridiculous solutions to the nation’s epidemic of school shootings. They’ve suggested everything from bulletproof backpacks to turning educational institutions into heavily armed compounds. Rick Scott floated the death penalty as a deterrent on Monday, despite that school shooters — reportedly including the one who killed six people at the Covenant School in Nashville — are often prepared to die at the scene.

A Tennessee congressman who reps the district where six people were killed in a school shooting Monday is under fire over a family Christmas photo showing him and kin proudly holding assault rifles.

Republican Rep. Andy Ogles, his wife and two of their three kids posed with the weapons as they stood in front of a decorated Christmas tree and smiled for the camera in 2021.

The wife and daughter held assault rifles, a particularly deadly weapon that Monday’s killer, Audrey Hale, toted during her Nashville rampage.

A Constitution Would Solve Israel's Government Crisis

 https://www.newsweek.com/constitution-would-solve-israels-government-crisis-opinion-1787758

In effect, this is a power struggle between the Knesset—the Israeli parliament—and the Israeli judiciary, which over many years has assumed substantial authority to overturn laws and other acts of the Israeli government. Israel does not have a written constitution that outlines the authority of the Knesset and the Israeli Supreme Court, but since the inception of the country's political system it has been understood that the Knesset—a European-style parliamentary system—is elected by the Israeli people and thus authorized to make laws.

A threat to democracy or much-needed reform? Israel’s judicial overhaul explained

Complicating matters further, should the bills pass parliament the Supreme Court must then potentially decide on laws curbing its own power. This raises the possibility of a constitutional standoff. Would the Supreme Court strike down the laws, and if so, how would the government respond?
