When Covid Subsided, Israel Reopened Its Schools. It Didn’t Go Well.

As the United States and other countries anxiously consider how to reopen schools, Israel, one of the first countries to do so, illustrates the dangers of moving too precipitously.

Confident it had beaten the coronavirus and desperate to reboot a devastated economy, the Israeli government invited the entire student body back in late May.

Within days, infections were reported at a Jerusalem high school, which quickly mushroomed into the largest outbreak in a single school in Israel, possibly the world.

The virus rippled out to the students’ homes and then to other schools and neighborhoods, ultimately infecting hundreds of students, teachers and relatives.

No signs Trump has a plan as experts say the pandemic enters new phase

President Donald Trump's top government experts now say that the pandemic is entering a new phase as it invades the rural heartland -- and they can't say how long it will last.
With millions of kids nowhere near going back to school and the economy reeling from a 32.9% annualized contraction in the second quarter, the months ahead are stretching into what looks like an endless crisis as Trump tweets "Make America Great Again" and spends his weekends on the golf course.
Top administration officials in recent days have repeatedly delivered information and warnings that directly contradict Trump's upbeat messaging on Friday on the virus: "We'll get rid of it, we'll beat it, and it will be soon."

Despite the worsening crisis, there is no sign of a new administration approach, or evidence of an effort to set up the massive testing and tracing nationwide program that experts say is needed to finally get a handle on the crisis.

The fascinating mystery of Trump's approach to Putin

President Trump's National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien on Monday invoked Ronald Reagan "looking down on us with a knowing smile" in a Washington Post opinion column under the headline, "President Trump is committed to defending the U.S., and Russia knows it." The President, wrote O'Brien, "has demonstrated to Russia that he means what he says about putting 'America First'."
This is a claim Trump himself has made repeatedly throughout his four years in office. But it is one that several former senior advisers reject. In fact, when interviewing current and former Trump administration officials for my upcoming book, "The Madman Theory: Trump Takes on the World," I found that explaining Trump's deference to Russia was one of the most difficult questions for them to answer. And even they acknowledged the record fails to back up the President.

Texas Gov. Abbott skipping GOP convention to deal with coronavirus outbreak

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott will not be attending the Republican National Convention later this month as he deals with the surge of coronavirus cases in his state.

Abbott, a Republican, has instead designated Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick to head to the pared-down convention in North Carolina and chair the Lone Star State’s delegation.

Abbott informed Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel that he won’t be attending the nominating convention in a letter late last week.

As of Monday, Texas had more than 453,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 7,515 deaths, although the state could not update its total count due to a system upgrade used to process lab results.

Trump health official: Time to ‘move on’ from hydroxychloroquine

A top official in the Trump administration's Covid-19 response effort said Sunday there is no evidence that hydroxychloroquine is an effective treatment for the virus, despite President Donald Trump's continued promotion of the anti-malaria drug.

In an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press," administration testing czar Brett Giroir said he could not recommend hydroxychloroquine because trials "do not show any benefit."
