In the Gaza War, the war against Iran, and now during the ceasefire, it increasingly appears that Israel is losing its freedom to maneuver, as Washington takes the wheel. Alongside diplomatic backing, here are four points showing how Israel seems to have become America's 51st state.
Part of this is obvious. Right now, Israel has three allies left that it can rely on - the US, Germany and Argentina. Germany wavers from time to time. Only the US can ensure Israel has the arms it needs and to shield it at the UNSC. Only the US can threaten Israel's enemies with real consequences. As a result, it's no surprise the US is acting this way. As they used to describe Biden's personal philosophy, he saw the US as Israel's big brother. The big brother protects the little brother but also teaches him proper behaviour and guides his actions.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, every time the US under Trump has seemed to be moving in a negative direction from Israel, it's turned out to be a ruse. Every time. So who knows what's really on tap this time?
Freedom to maneuver is fine, but israel faces sanctions from Europe, legal cases which can also affect trade, boycotts, and enemies. Continuing the war once the hostages are released, this is an insane strategy which will cost many more lives. of course the hareidim don't serve, so it's of no importance to them if DL or chiloni jews get killed.
ReplyDeleteThere are more things going on - US wants to bring Saudi into the Abraham accords, and so needs to put pressure on israel. A day or 2 ago trump threatened to destroy Hamas if they don't disarm.
Plus America has backed israel with emergency supplies, especially in th wars with iran, Hezbollah, not mention hamas.
