Alschech (Devarim 23:20) Don’t charge interest - The reason for the prohibition of the ribis, the Sages said that a trangressor of this prohibition is a disbeliever in the G-d of Israel and the redemption from Egypt because ribis shows a disbelief in Divine providence, and indicates he thinks that success and profit are natural, or according to mazel.
Sounds nice but has a plot hole: why is ribis permitted when loaning to Gentiles?
ReplyDeleteHeter isska, and boom, ribis is permitted
DeleteIt is no longer ribis
DeleteAre you claiming G=d should not discriminate or you want apologetics?
DeleteThis is actually a common argument that get reformers make.
DeleteThe Torah prohibited ribis but Chazal invented heter iska.
The Torah prohibited collecting loans after Sheviis but Chazal invented prozbul.
The Torah prohibited forcing men to give a get. So how come suddenly there's a lack of invention?
There was an invention, but it has not really taken off in the halachic tradition - Afkinu, - Rav Eliezer berkovits approached Rav Moshe to have this as a solution to modern agunah problem, but Rav Moshe did not allow it.
