Abarbanel caused exile from Spain
there seems to be no factual basis for the above claims. The family name did not originate because of an expensive ring. It could be that tensions were exacerbated by Jews showing their wealth but the exile and inquisition were more caused by their resistance to truthfully convert rather than convert for convenience or to avoid harm. In other words the existence of Jews - even after conversion - were viewed as a threat just as they were viewed in Germany in recent history
Wkipedia states "The Abravanel family (Hebrew: אַבְּרַבַנְאֵל ʾAbravanʾēl or אַבַּרבְּנְאֵל ʾAbarbənəʾēl), also spelled as Abarbanel, Abrabanel, Avravanel, Barbernell, or Barbanel – literally meaning Ab ("father") rabban ("priest") el ("of God") – is one of the oldest and most distinguished Jewish families. It first achieved prominence on the Iberian peninsula during the Middle Ages. Its members claim to trace their origin to the biblical King David. Members of this family lived in Seville, Córdoba (Spanish province), Castile-Leon, and Calatayud. Seville is where its most prominent representative, Don Judah Abravanel, once dwelt.

Interesting mix of ideas. Was Abarbanel a halachic man? Was it just because he had a beautiful wife that there was a Spanish inquisition? What about rambam and ramban who both fled the muslims and the inquisition respectively?

ReplyDeletethe Abravanel or Abarbanel family, had escaped the massacre in Castile in 1391. A student of the rabbi of Lisbon, Joseph Chaim,[4] he became well versed in rabbinic literature and in the learning of his time, devoting his early years to the study of Jewish philosophy. Abarbanel is quoted as saying that he included Joseph ibn Shem-Tov as his mentor. At 20 years old, he wrote on the original form of the natural elements, on religious questions and prophecy. Together with his intellectual abilities, he showed a complete mastery of financial matters. This attracted the attention of King Afonso V of Portugal, who employed him as treasurer.
He used his high position, and the great wealth he had inherited from his father, to aid his co-religionists. When his patron Afonso captured the city of Arzila, in Morocco, the Jewish captives faced being sold as slaves. Abarbanel contributed largely to the funds needed to free them, and personally arranged for collections throughout Portugal. He also wrote to his learned and wealthy friend,[5] Vitale (Yehiel) Nissim da Pisa, on behalf of the captives.
