Arutz 7 A red line was crossed Tuesday night in intra-hareidi political
rivalry when a man in his 20s broke into the home of Rabbi Aharon Leib
Shteinman, who is 99 years old, and physically attacked him.
The incident took place as votes in the municipal elections were
still being counted nationwide, and while Rabbi Shteinman was preparing a
Torah lesson he intended to give Wednesday. It is seen as being
connected to the municipal elections, in which the faction that follows
Rabbi Shteinman received 8 seats on the Jerusalem Municipal Council, but
Rabbi Shteinman's favored candidate for mayor, Moshe Lion, lost.
Sources in Rabbi Shteinman's home said that the attacker apparently
entered through a window. He approached the rabbi, held him with both
hands and began to shake him vigorously, while verbally insulting him
and saying he had come "to get revenge."
Upon hearing the commotion in the rabbi's room, his assistants and
followers quickly entered the room and held the down the attacker until
police came and arrested him.
The rabbi is reportedly not feeling well after the attack, and his
doctor is conducting a series of tests to determine how badly he was
hurt.
pure insanity
ReplyDeletepeople didn't see it coming, the way these two groups act towards each other? you vote for bnei torah, you're a kofer, that;s what the signs said. and bnei torah felt the same towards degel.
ReplyDeletei've said it before and i'll say it again: the frum world (not just them, but we are talking about bnei brak) has no problem with violence when used against their perceived enemies. when rav stav was attacked, it was fine. when rav ovadia cursed him, no problem. when rav ben dahan was attacked, also good.
so now the craziness is coming home to roost.
no suprises here.
Is this all about money?
ReplyDeleteMESIRAH!!!
ReplyDeleteGosh, who called the cops? Isn't that not allowed?
ReplyDeleteIsn't that a double negative?
Delete"not allowed" being a free translation of "assur"
Deletehence, "isn't that assur"
So take out both the negatives.
Delete"Is that allowed"?
Incitement is a mob mentality that leads to violence.
ReplyDeleteWhen oh when will the incitement talk end?
Apologists keep telling us that violent language, endemic in our world, is just a sort of habit and doesn't lead to violent action. But we see that it does. This is not the first venerable Rav roughed up by allegedly Orthodox hooligans..
ReplyDeleteWhat is the cause of this? I didn't think this was possible.
ReplyDeleteYoung Man Who Attacked Rav Shteinman Known Not to Be Normal
ReplyDeletehttp://matzav.com/young-man-who-attacked-rav-shteinman-known-not-to-be-normal
How do the loonies know whom to go after? It's not so random!
ReplyDeleteLiving in the USA, I feel a world away from this mess. I am going to try my best to make sense of it. Someone help me.
ReplyDeleteIt seems that the dispute between Rav Shteinman and Rav Auerbach is: Rav Shteinman wants to negotiate a deal with the gov't about the draft, whereas Rav Auerbach wants no negotiations at all. This seems like a significant rift, and makes sense. This brings Rav Auerbach more in line with Satmar, and Brisk, who don't work with the gov't altogether. Why this has turned into a world war, I have no idea.
avf; This excuse has been used for the spitters of Bet Shemesh, the assaulters of IDF soldiers, the death threats to Reb Shmuel Auverbach, and the those who tear down posters they don't like, etc. THEY ARE NOT NORMAL.....therefore beginning and end of the story,,,they are NOT NORMAL. They do not represent anyone, speak for anyone or even have any legitimacy since they are NOT NORMAL..
ReplyDeletethe biryonim caused the destruction of Yerushalayim with their crazy acts,
Deletethey also were not "normal".
People who aren't normal can cause tremendous damage. The damage caused doesn't become less destructive based on the sanity of the perpetrators The Baryonim who destroyed staples that would have kept Yerushalayim going for more than 2 decades, could have been rhinoceroses for all it mattered. The fact is that the damage was done. The reason we discuss the sanity of lack of sanity of the perpetrator, is to determine whether he is representing a faction of mainstream society, in which case they must be addressed as such and dealt with appropriately, or if they he is simply an uncontrolled beast who devours and tramples and can not be reasoned with.
DeleteThere must be freedom of expression of opinions if they are not inciting riot. However it is inevitable that beasts will take any opinion expressed and act upon it in crazy ways. Does this mean that there should be no freedom of expression?
We need to end the kind of vituperation that could make abnormal the new normal, and might have already done so in some places. What kind of proper election campaign is it where elements of leadership say, in effect, "you are commanded to vote our way, no questions asked, and to loathe the other guys"? Whatever happened to presenting a detailed, convincing argument based on principles and facts, not ranking people out?
ReplyDeleteCaren May; In this case it is not an excuse.

I sense that a lot of normal people are also acting out irrationally in Israeli politics, encouraged by a degraded, irrational process.
DeleteI simply cannot fathom someone getting up and punching a 99-year-old man, regardless of who he is or what his political views are. Just can't wrap my head around this one. MESSED UP!
ReplyDeleteThis was the story as reported by most of the secular news sites at first , later it was changed to grabbing him and shaking him . While this does not in anyway lessen how wrong and terrible it is what he did, it does put a different twist on it on the attackers state of mind.
DeleteIt may be true the attacker was insane and belongs in a hospital, but becoming insane is surely helped along by what goes on in the world. If there was more love in the world we would have less sick people.
