Spitzer sentenced to 7 years for arson attack

Shaul Spitzer, a follower of the New Square grand rebbe, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for first-degree assault in the attack on Aron Rottenberg at 4:15 a.m. May 22 during an attempt to burn down the family's home on Truman Avenue in New Square.

Spitzer was sentenced this morning in state Supreme Court in New City.

Rottenberg, 44, once a plumber, continues to recover from third-degree burns over 50 percent of his body, suffered when Spitzer set off an incediary device while grappling with Rottenberg. Spitzer suffered burns to his hands and arms.

  1. Spitzer got off easy. Skver is corrupt and truly evil. The entire town should be purged from the face of the planet.

    1. A person's outrage needs to be tempered with Daas Torah.

One statement from Chazal to consider:

ויחמול שאול והעם על אגג וכו'. א"ר יהושע בן לוי, כל שהוא רחמן על אכזרים לסוף נעשה אכזר על רחמנים, להלן כתיב ואת נוב עיר הכהנים הכה לפי חרב
[ילקוט שמעוני שמואל א, טו, סוף רמז קכא]

"A person's outrage needs to be tempered with Daas Torah."

Agreed. People should refrain from passing judgement until they've actually spent a shabbos there. I haven't, but some friends have- and they were mighty impressed. It's important to remember that this is only one 18 year old nut. Equally important (and equally cliche) is that that they don't generally report about steady chassodim and ha'chnassas orchim in the mainstream media. Nothing antisemitic about it- it's just that no one's interested in hearing about your wonderful shabbos. They'd much rather see a gory picture of someone in hospital bed.

  4. Lets compare the per capita crime statistics of New Square with the rest of Rockland County.

The media will never compare it since it demonstrates the Hasidim are law abiding citizens, with an almost non-existant crime issue, comparitive to the crime among the non-Jewish and Non-Hasidic members of the rest of the county.

  5. I definitely don't agree that "the entire town should be purged from the face of the planet". Chas Veshalom!

I've also spent Shabbos there, and know some very fine people there.

"A person's outrage needs to be tempered with Daas Torah". Shimon and Levi were "outraged" at what happened to their sister Dinah, and Pinchas was "outraged" by the actions of Zimri. Yet, there remains a qualitative difference in their reactions, as I personally heard from R. Yaakov Kaminetzky, and is published in his "Emes Le'Yaakov". I intentionally was vague as to where the outrage should be placed, and everyone can understand it as he would like to.

Practically no one was actually there when all the alleged acts took place, but as it was reported to the media, the entire incident and its background, seems very troubling to me. If there was more to be said for the side of the powers to be in New Square, then they have been very poor in getting their PR message out...

Please correct me if I'm worng, but I don't recall reading any report about an outpouring of "yom tefillah" for the refuah sheleimah of the victim. Contrast that with the report that on the day of the sentencing hundreds of residents gathered in the shul to daven for the person you label as an "18 year old nut". Odd.

Well, assuming God gave it said to keep it, that's probably reason enough...
