Fighting the Internet - Rav Matisyahu Soloman

9 comments :

  1. The Giyus Banot fight was political, as was the rhetoric between the two sides. The State had no intention of putting resisting girls before a firing squad, nor to place them in prison -- and the Chazon Ish knew this full well.

CI's official biography describes the he did not feel that Giyus Banot was of sufficient concern to discourage families from moving to EY.

Therefore, I do not believe that Rav Matisyahu is correct in saying that it was a "mamash" a matter of being prepared to give up one's life, nor did it have a lot to do with arayos. I threfore do not see its relevance to the Internet issue, which is indeed very serious.

(BTW, what the State wanted was that the girls do office work and go home at night.)

  2. Dovid. The chazon ish was against frum girls being under the authority of males who aren't their fathers. Not just being in the army.

    I know.
My point was that the CI and the medina were just trading rhetoric.

Teh CI never expected it would come to girls being lead to the firing squad or to prison.

If this is such an important "message" why is the Novominsker Rebbe Rav Perlow falling asleep all the time and fighting to keep himself awake as Rav Solomon is talking?

Notice how the whole spectrum of speeches at this latest Agudah convention are posted online and broadcast on YouTube video on the INTERNET which is connected to so many of the "forbidden" things that Rav Solomon is complaining about in this clip that's part of many others it was posted with about the latest Agudah convention.

To be consistent with its anti-Internet position, the Agudah should contact YouTube and have every last video from its convention pulled ASAP from where its being posted online.

Otherwise, the message Rav Solomon is trying to preach, with the Moetzes Gedolim at his side, makes no sense and could even be called a self-contradictory or worse.

You can't have it both ways. Either the Internet is an irreversible and integral part of modern life (connected to all sorts of modern devices such as cell phones, Ipads, Tablets, BlackBerries, lap tops, etc) or shut off the electricity and throw away every single electronic COMMUNICATIONS device not just for visuals, including "ordinary" telephones that can be used to dial numbers for "phone sex" and used for loshon hora of the worst kind.

Here is Rav Avrom Schorr talking passionately in more detail at the Agudah convention against the challenge of communications devices:

Here is the follow-up by Rav Elya Brudny of Brooklyn's Mirrer Yeshiva to Rav Schorr's and Rav Solomon's speeches.

Rav Brudny's speech is actually quite interesting and he lays out a valid Torah outlook to understand the challenge of TECHNOLOGY in general that he classes as part of the "yetzer hara" and the "Satan" but there is a broader hashkafa at work in what he has to say worth watching and listening to, in tow parts:

AGUDA CONVENTION: HARAV ELYA BRUDNY PART 1 (YouTube 14 minutes)

    and

AGUDA CONVENTION: HARAV ELYA BRUDNY PART 2 (YouTube 14 minutes)

one can easily notice that the audience perks up to what he has say, especially Rav Shmuel Kaminetsky on the left, while Rav Perlow still finds it hard to stay awake during this 30 minute talk. Rav Aron Feldman of Ner Yisroel Yeshiva of Baltimore arrives somewhere in the middle and is seated on the dais. Next to Perlow is Rav Levin of the Telz Yeshiva in Chicago who is also very alert when the camera catches him.

  8. RaP: Youtube will not delete content of a third party if Agudah asks them to. And Agudah can't play whack-a-mole forever looking for content.
