On the morning of the US midterm elections, US President Donald Trump made a startling claim in an interview with Fox & Friends: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu himself initiated a plan to end nearly $4 billion in annual American assistance to Israel.
The hosts repeatedly pressed Trump to clarify whether he meant military aid, cash, or weapons deliveries. The president insisted that the arrangement would end by December, while Israel would remain free to purchase American weapons.
Trump also explained the political calculation behind the move: taking away one of the Democrats’ most effective arguments against Republicans, particularly in Michigan, where Israel has become a central issue in the fiercely contested Senate race. But his announcement raises a major question: What happens to the existing US-Israel military assistance agreement, which runs through 2028?
It's not aid. It's money Israel uses to buy US armaments. Both countries benefit.
ReplyDeleteTruth is that it's been a long time since the US sent actually economic aid to Israel and that's something we can be proud of.
