He ‘won the lottery’ of Israeli politics. But Naftali Bennett remains an enigma

 https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2021-06-10/israel-naftali-bennett-likely-prime-minister-enigma

Bennett still wears a small yarmulke, or skullcap — in Israel, normally a signifier of devout Orthodox Judaism — which clings to his bald pate in a precarious manner that even admirers sometimes lightly mock. But his degree of religious observance is sometimes described by Israeli observers as “modern Orthodox lite.” His wife, Gilat, a high-end pastry chef, is reported to be secular but a keeper of the Sabbath.

  1. In a way, I feel bad for him. Unless he has the most amazing tenure of any prime minister and manages to push all the left wing parties to the right and keep the Arab party from having any schlep at all, his career is actual over. His party and voters will abandon him the first chance they get in the next election. This is it, his peak, his one moment and then nothing further. Got to be hard known that, even as you sit in the centre seat, you're basically done.

Bennett has good potential, but he would do much better, down the line, if he had patience and humility to wait his turn.

  3. Agreed. On the other hand, Bib's first shot was also a mess and people thought he was finished when he lost to Barak and then Sharon took over the Likud. And look what happened there.

  4. Netanyahu is an elder statesman, and has decades of political savvy and experience.

Bennett is foolish, for thinking that he should replace Netanyahu, today. It's indicative, that he doesn't fully comprehend what it really takes, to successfully run the State of Israel.

I hope that I'm proven wrong.

  5. There is a feeling that anything is better than bibi - amongst the left. Bibi is ruthless politically. A guy I knew in yeshiva used to work for him, and he told some rather nasty things about his personality.
Bennett is a cynical opportunist. But they all are. Only decent politician is Benny begin, who has retired.

  6. Politicians generally need to be tough, in order to get higher in the food chain.

During elections, they're not running for Middos Man of the year award, and Israel needs a tough leader, who can ruthlessly deal with its enemies.

Turncoat Bennet broke his biggest election promises, stole his constituencies votes, and turned them over to those he swore never to have to do with.
    Shame on him!
