Why balloons strapped to explosives are the latest flashpoint in Israel-Hamas tensions

The Israeli military launched airstrikes against Hamas targets in Gaza overnight after militants floated dozens of so-called "incendiary balloons" over the border fence into Israel.

Officials said at least 20 fires were started Tuesday by the balloons. Palestinian media reported the retaliatory Israeli strikes caused material damages, with no casualties reported.
More balloons were launched Wednesday, starting at least four more fires, Israeli fire and rescue authorities said.
While militants have been sending balloons into Israel for years, the Israeli military's response of airstrikes in Gaza is a new escalation. Israeli officials said it was part of a message to Hamas that any provocation will be met with force.

  1. Hamas gives the impression of an unstoppable phenomenon. Their buildings, tunnels, leaders, military officers and soldiers have been targeted by a superior force, and even their families have had casualties, and they keep coming.

This has been going on for decades. They won't give up.

  2. It may be that the State of Israel is not interested in "winning" against Hamas, which would entail totally crushing Gaza, and the great loss of civilian life, and also civilian and military casualties on the Israeli side. It simply is interested in degrading Hamas' military capabilities, and "kicking the can down the road", for some future military leader, who will have a better solution for Israel.

  3. It's the propaganda. Israel's firing missiles because of balloons!
