After coronavirus vaccine success, is Israel’s MigVax still needed?

Despite encouraging news that at least three vaccines provide some protection against COVID-19, leading Israeli medical entrepreneurs say additional vaccine and treatment options are still needed to end the pandemic.

“There will be other vaccines, no question,” said Eyal Desheh, chairman of MigVax, an Israeli company developing an oral vaccine for COVID-19. “But I would caution against declaring victory.”

  1. When you're not first to market, you need something to stand out. Either increased effectiveness data or a new format. Given the advertised 95% efficacy of the three leading vaccines, claiming something similar wouldn't justify the effort. If there was an issue of importing the vaccines, that would justify the effort. Similarly, the idea that in case of an emergency Israel would need to produce a domestic supply quickly would justify proceeding.
But the last paragraph does encourage proceeding. So far everything released is by injection. An oral vaccine would be something that would stand out.

  2. Another injectable would be lost in the swell of injectables currently coming out. . An oral vaccine would be a game changer.
