In an open letter Wednesday that blew the lid off of a hushed misconduct accusation involving a prominent spiritual leader in the national religious camp, the chief rabbi of Safed called on the public to stay away from a respected counterpart, accusing him of carrying out several inappropriate relationships with female followers, among them an adherent whom he convinced to divorce her husband.
Three weeks after the national religious Srugim news site broke a story about an unnamed yeshiva head who had been asked to resign due to “personal entanglements,” Safed’s Chief Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu publicly identified the embroiled individual as Rabbi Shmuel Tal, the head of of the Torat HaChaim yeshiva as well as several other religious institutions in the central town of Yad Binyamin.
Seems to start when rabbis play G_d, give personal and marital advise, with no intellectual or moral qualifications. This is a general problem.

ReplyDeletemoderate of the young generation of religious Zionist rabbis, was a
classmate of Tal's in elementary school and in yeshiva high school. They
were also members of the same branch of the Bnei Akiva religious
Zionist youth movement. Lau recalls that "midway through 11th grade,
[Tal] told us that he intended to complete his matriculation
requirements that year and to then devote himself to Torah study with
the goal of becoming one of the greatest rabbinical scholars of this
generation. He dedicated all his energies to that goal. He left the
yeshiva a year before the rest of his class and totally engrossed
himself in the world of the high yeshivas. He was like one of the
characters in a legend: He acted as if he had limitless physical powers.
He is also blessed with immense powers of concentration. And that is
how he became a great rabbinical scholar."
According
to Lau, what sets Tal apart from the others is the fact that his
development was very independent and very eclectic. Tal attended several
yeshivas, both Zionist and ultra-Orthodox, although he did not "adopt" a
rabbi as a spiritual guide in any of them. He attended Yeshivat Hakotel
and Mercaz Harav in Jerusalem, and spent a number of significant years
at the ultra-Orthodox Ma'alot Hatorah yeshiva, headed by Rabbi Shmuel
Auerbach (son of one of the great rabbinical scholars of the previous
generation, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach). The important result of this
process of development, says Lau, is that Tal "is very independent and
doesn't owe anything to anybody." "
