Author of Hush speaking in Chicago

  1. Judy Brown was never abused. Her book, a work of fiction, is supposedly based on someone she knew.

  2. Steve,

The text stated, "which is based upon the story of a case of child sex abuse in Brooklyn's Chassidic community." Nowhere does it state that Ms. Brown was the victim.

    What is your point?

  3. It is fiction. Supposedly with some parts "based" on a story she saw.

  4. Steve, and you think it's so far removed from reality to make it unbelievable or not worthy of consideration or reading? I'm struggling to understand your seeming objection on the grounds that she isn't describing something that happened to her.

Nope - neither is truth the truth.

I had one client who told me that his marriage collapsed in the yichud room when he told his wife the truth. "You are almost everything I was looking for." True statement but one that did not convey the reality of his happiness to his wife and instead came out an insult.

The issue is whether Hush accurately conveys that nature of abuse. The general consensus of readers who have been abused is that it does. So it conveys the truth even though some of it is fictionalized.

  7. "Fiction is fiction."

Iyov is fiction. Uncle Tom's Cabin is fiction.

  8. I helped organize Judy Brown's appearance in Chicago. Obviously, I was there to hear her speak. I am not going to try to summarize her very moving speech because I oould not possibly do it justice.

You will just have to wait until the recording is posted on the Internet and you will be able to watch or listen to you her yourself.

  9. This book was a literary masterpiece. It should be required reading for Jewish high school seniors, as it teaches about charedi culture and the issue of child sex abuse in our community in a well written and poignent manner.

Harry Maryles did a decent summary of the event at haemtza.blogspot.com

Judy Brown gave a riveting speech in which her writing talent was on full display. She spoke about a personal journey of ignorance to ignoring until she was finally shaken to write about sexual abuse.

In my mind, her most striking statement was that when she showed her manuscript of Hush to an askan, he asked her "Which suicide was this book about, there were a bunch of them (ie suicides)" and he convinced her to not publish her book at that time.
