Minority rules: Scientists discover tipping point for the spread of ideas

 https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/07/110725190044.htm

Scientists have found that when just 10 percent of the population holds an unshakable belief, their belief will always be adopted by the majority of the society. The scientists used computational and analytical methods to discover the tipping point where a minority belief becomes the majority opinion.

  1. Except that for a long time 10% of Americans believed that Elvis was still alive and hiding out down in the South. The other 90% just laughed.

  2. different ideas may spread in different ways-
permitting gay and lgbtqxyz etc has spread , whereas it was once taboo.

But other ideas have spread, eg forbidding torture, racism, slavery, whcih are perhaps better ideas or more acceptable to a Torah perspective.

But scientific knowledge may also spread that way. it used to be thought that if we travel faster than 30mph , it will kill us. That it is impossible to fly. that Earth is centre of the Universe. These old ideas were once majority held, and a minority of scientists or researchers brought the new revolutionary concept into the arena, and they gradually became accepted. some people still think the Earth is centre of the universe.

  3. This arbitrary 10 percent tipping point seems very strange. The article is ten years old.
