Russia and especially China are moving to dominate the Arctic. To get there they need the Northwest Passage which is opening up due to climate change. It would be a disaster for the West if China decided to enter the Canadian Arctic and set up bases there. Don't think they're not working on that. The US can effectively control the western end through Alaska but has no direct presence at the eastern opening. Who's going to monitor that? Canada? That's a joke. Denmark? Nope. It's going to be the US. Now I know that the US is sick and tired of effectively being Canada's army and being the one who actually protects our border, if only because Canada's ingratitude and mockery of the US makes it a bitter thing. Now they're going to have to protect Greenland only for Denmark to insult them? Outside of the US, the rest of NATO is ill-equipped to handle Russian and Chinese threats and not taking any serious steps to change that (except, ironically, the Germans). The US has to step up so it's understandable they want accommodations.
