Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Wednesday that he does not believe Ukraine joining NATO is “realistic,” as the Trump administration looks to broker an end to Russia’s war in the country.
Speaking ahead of a meeting of the U.S.-led Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Brussels, Hegseth also indicated Washington will no longer prioritize European and Ukrainian security.
“The United States does not believe that NATO membership for Ukraine is a realistic outcome of a negotiated settlement,” Hegseth said, adding U.S. troops will not be involved in securing a post-war Kyiv.
Hegseth said Wednesday he wanted to “directly and unambiguously express that stark strategic realities prevent the United States of America from being primarily focused on the security of Europe.”
And he's right.

1) Russia is paranoid about being invaded from the West. Yes, yes, they're the big bad and the real threat to freedom in Europe but they think they're the target. If you argue with them and say that there's no way the West wants to invade Russia, they'll tell you "Napolean and Hitler." This is why NATO on their doorstep aggravates them so much. 2) Russia sees itself as the center of the world, the most important country and all that. It also sees Ukraine as part of its ancestral territory. Ukraine is to Russia what Hebron is to Jews, part of its history inseparable from the rest. A NATO membership severs any chance of a future unity between the two countries and this would be a national humiliation. They would not stand for this and putting Ukraine in NATO would be more damaging than beneficial for world peace.
If NATO should be discussing anything, it should be about kicking Turkey out.
