Chareidim live in a Bubble

I was recently told that one of my grandchildren was told by her teacher  that the current war with the Arabs and Israel doesn't concern her since it is only the secular who are fighting. This was done so she shouldn't worry about the danger Israel is in today. Other grandchilodren were told that as long as they kept learning Torah in the beis hamedrash they faced no danger from missiles

In short there is little to no empathy for the sacrifices the non chareidim are making in fighting and dying because they too can become chareidim learn Torah and do mitzvos and be protected miraculously

  1. Don't forget that the consistent line of the Chareidki MK's throughout the war and especially at the beginning was (a) finance this war however you want but don't you dare touch our budget (b) find soldiers wherever you can but don't you dare draft our boys.

  2. Historically, we have records of wars fought in the Tanakh, and also in the Bayit Sheini era as per Josephus history, Maccabees, and some short anecdotes in the Talmud.
In the Torah and Neviim, we have frum people engaged in war. Yes, Moshe had to pray for the battles to be successful, but in his younger days he would fight the Egyptians too. In the chanukah war against the Yavanim, it was the Cohanim who fought, not the secular.
So it was always a mitzvah to defend ourselves.

    1. Chanukah is a misunderstood holiday. The seculars love it because they gave it a "freedom of/from religion!" theme and fit the Zionist belief in Jewish self-reliance on the battlefield.. The Chareidim like it because it established a Torah state. But the real Maccabees were the Dati Leumi.

    2. Actually the chareidim downplay the military side of Chanukah and also the Maccabees (who were one step away from tzedukim). That's despite what we say in Al hanissim. They were tzaddikim and won a military victory.
I once suggested we say al hanissim for Yom haatzmaut.

    3. The Conservative's Sim Shalom prayer book has an Al HaNissim for Yom Ha'atzma'ut.

    4. Some conservatives are heterosexual. Does that make it a mitzva to be queer?

    5. Funny you should say that.
If one watches enough modern TV, there is a actually a very strong message that is pushed on multiple shows - it is normal to be homosexual or bisexual and people who are strictly heterosexual are being the times, out of fashion or have something wrong with them.
So with the liberals, it would seem to be a mitzvah.

    6. But some orthodox seem to think anything conservative does, we must do the opposite

    8. Hence the ban on swordfish.
It's a tricky situation. On one hand, we should be self-confident and decide what to do without basing it on "Well they do it so we have to do the opposite just to show them they're wrong". On the other hand, the minute we do something they already do, they'll shout "You see! Orthodoxy admits we're right!" and that's not acceptable either.

    9. Ultra orthodox see it the same way regarding centrist orthodox.

    10. Yes, that's always been the comeback from Reformatives when MO's look down on them - you think you're so great? The UO's think you're nothing.
The difference, of course, is that MO accepts Torah MiSinai and the authority of the mitzvos while the Reformatives don't so it's not a fair comparison.

    11. That's what I say to frum MO who look down on less frum MO.
Even in hareidi, they have MH and HH. The MH look down on Modern hareidi.
There's also kiruv Hareidi who say they accept science. Then you gradually find that they deny science.
