Pierre Trudeau, Canadian prime minister from 1968-1983 was a great admirer of Fidel Castro (rumour is he even shared his wife with him, google it), thought Mao Zedong to be a great thinker and philosopher and didn't understand why people thought Stalin was a bad guy. Yet he's remembered as one of Canada's greatest prime ministers and an important international statesman. Oh wait, because he was a liberal.
