Biden Moves Forward on $1 Billion in New Arms for Israel

The latest weapons package includes the potential transfer of $700 million in tank ammunition, $500 million in tactical vehicles and $60 million in mortar rounds, the officials said. There are still additional steps before the weapons would be approved and delivered.

The decision to proceed with the approval process underscored the Biden administration’s reluctance to deepen its rift with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the Rafah operation by restricting longer-term weapons deals with its closest Middle East ally.

  1. No, the decision to proceed is to head off Congress passing a bill demanding he make this transfer which he would have to veto.

    2. Because world politics is a chess game. There are always moves and counter-moves .
In this case, the bill puts Biden in a difficult position. It says "Send Israel the weapons you promised them"
Now, Congress has no place in handling war strategies. As commander in chief, it's the President's job to make final decisions. A bill like this would be vetoes and correctly so since it has no legal basis.
On the other hand, there's image - Biden, the great "friend" of Israel, vetoing a bill that demands he do what he promised and support Israel. Even though he would be technically right, it would look awful.
So the easiest way out is to say "No worries, I've change my mind!"

    3. Wow. So great move by the GOP. Was a win-win for them.

    4. Are you asserting that Republicans are acting cynically merely to attack Biden without concern for welfare of Israel or USA?!

    5. Republicans are acting cynically, of course, in order to attack Biden. It's an election year, after all. But considering Biden's attempts to coddle and ally himself with Iran, I would suggest the Democrats have less concern for the welfare of Israel and the USA
