Donald Trump has claimed for months that the election was rigged - but that message is now at the centre of his campaign just as his poll numbers begin to slump. And in doing so he hits at the very heart of American democracy - the idea that elections are free and fair.
That was a completely different time. Mixing apples and oranges, with some kiwis thrown into the mix.
ReplyDeleteIn the run-up to the 2016 election, Donalld Trump was positioning himself for going back to his life as a real estate mogul. Up until the night before the election when he turned to Mike Pence, his running mate, after an especially boisterous and raucous rally and said, "This doesn't feel like second place," the possibility of winning just hadn't sunk in.
So claiming rigged elections was a way to lose without really losing. Donald Trump could go back to work saying he was cheated, and leave it at that.
Once he won the election fair and square, and ruled for close to four years, it became imperative to stay in power because the Left had tried every trick in the book to pry him from power, starting with the crass Steele Report.
Now, in 2020-2021, claiming rigged elections was payback time. Revenge, if you will. This is the same reason why Trump must go back to the White House. If for no other reason than to teach the Democrats a lesson.
