A photo has been shared on social media showing the packaging of the product “Boneless Sliced Hardwood Smoked Ham Steak.”
Under the brand of PICS owned by the Golub Company; Price Chopper in Schenectady, New York, it bore the symbol of the OU, the world’s largest kosher certification agency.
“Kosher when Moshiach (comes),” one person wrote. “Maybe he came (and) we didn’t hear yet.” Others suspected it was photoshopped.
In a statement released on Monday, June 7, the Orthodox Union’s kosher division said: “OU – The Orthodox Union does not certify PICS Ham. Some packaging bears an unauthorized OU. This product is being withdrawn from the marketplace.”
This is obviously a joke. However, toxic hand sanitizer with an OU is even an even bigger joke.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the story appears to be true, and illustrates the fragility of the kashrus industry, where ham can inadvertently be labeled "kosher".
ReplyDeleteHow the heck did a ham get a kosher certification? This man knows.

Again, if poison can get a hechsher...
ReplyDeleteI can't figure something out.
ReplyDeleteWhere in Halacha does the fact a food has a symbol on it allow it to be consumed.
I understand if there is a butcher shop, and the meat is packaged and sealed with a unique stamp, that it can be argued that this is sufficient to allow it to be consumed.
But an OU on a package can be printed by anyone.
OH. MY. G-D.!!! 🤯🤯🤯
