Temple in Jerusalem

In his novel The Old New Land, depicting the future Jewish State as he envisioned it, Theodor Herzl – founder of political Zionism – included a depiction of a rebuilt Jerusalem Temple. However, in Herzl's view, the Temple did not need to be built on the precise site where the old Temple stood and which is now taken up by the Muslim Al-Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock, which are very sensitive holy sites. By locating the Temple at an unspecified different Jerusalem location, the Jewish state envisioned by Herzl avoids the extreme tension over this issue experienced in the actual Israel. Also, worship at the Temple envisioned by Herzl does not involve animal sacrifice, which was the main form of worship at the ancient Jerusalem Temple. Rather, the Temple depicted in Herzl's book is essentially just an especially big and ornate synagogue, holding the same kind of services as any other synagogue.

  1. Okay, so they built it. It's on King George Street next to the Kings Hotel.

  2. Brisker rov wasn't too happy about it. Rav elyashiv begged to differ.

  3. Opposite the once Sheraton and now Leonardo Plaza. But this is just a synagogue, it is not a beit Mikdash.
Herzl is dreaming about a pre-Bayit Sheini Temple. My view is that these things will happen, more likely according to Neviim, but the Hareidim will still oppose them. If Moshaihc comes, they will oppose him, for changing things. If he fights wars and beats the occupiers, they will cite the 3 oaths. If he builds the temple and restores sacrifices, they will accuse him of breaking halacha, and find some chumra on ritual purity that they will cite. This will be the end of hareidism.

  4. From all I've read, the Brisker Rov was generally unhappy about lots of things.
I got a Lubavitcher mad once by pointing out that the only way they could claim that the Rebbe, z"l, was Moshiach was by deliberately misrepresenting the three things Moshiach is supposed to do but if they were going to be honest, Ben Gurion, z"l, actually did 2 out of 3.

  5. I did the same, but used rav Goren. Got everyone angry.

    Here are the requirements :

    1. A king
    2. Fights wars
    3. Brings jews back to Torah
    4. Brings jews back to Israel
    5. Builds temple.

    King, is hard to prove.

Rav Goren did 2,3, &4. He made the army compliant with halacha, and single handedly created the BT wave after 67.

He basically broke with military plans and decided to liberate Jerusalem. Ok, didn't build the temple, but got closer than the rebbe or anyone else.
