This is a mistake well-meaning Gentiles constantly make. They assume 1) Jews know what being Jewish means 2) That they actually care about being Jewish. Mark Zuckerberg would be the most famous example. He allowed, until recently, Holocaust deniers to have a presence on Facebook. He married a Gentile. His favourite food is pork. Trump and others assume that because he's Jewish he must love Israel but why make that assumption?

Exactly. Trump can't understand that the vast majority of non-religious Jews don't know anything about Judaism, don't see Israelis as close kinsmen, and assume that Judaism is just secular liberalism with latkes.
