The attendees violated halacha by putting themselves in a dangerous situation and saying "God will protect me because I'm religious!" The whole thing was an affront to halacha from the start. But when you've decided that only those parts of the Torah you agree with are applicable and anyone who paskens differently is wrong, this is what you get.
