Pakistan's Supreme Court has ruled that four men convicted of kidnapping and murdering American journalist Daniel Pearl should go free.
The
court said the men had "suffered irreparable harm and extreme
prejudice" after spending 18 years behind bars prior, and in December ordered all four to be set free,
but both the Pearl family and the Pakistani authorities appealed to the
country's Supreme Court, which on Thursday ruled against them.
We should remember why Daniel Pearl was in Pakistan in the first place. An intermarried and unaffiliated Jew, he went over to write a piece sympathetic to the Taliban. He only fell into their hands when he sought them out. His only really Jewish moment was when he was forced to acknowledge his Jewishness at the moment of his death. I want to be sympathetic but it's hard.
