Is Cuomo Directive to Blame for Nursing Home COVID Deaths, as US Official Claims?

 https://khn.org/news/is-cuomo-directive-to-blame-for-nursing-home-covid-deaths-as-us-official-claims/

 Our Ruling

In a tweet, the HHS assistant secretary for public affairs said that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo “forced” nursing homes across the state to admit COVID-positive patients and that this policy fueled the spread of COVID-19 that led to thousands of deaths in the nursing home population.

Although nursing homes felt pressure to accept COVID-positive patients, they were not actually forced to do so. State regulations require nursing homes to accept patients only if they can care for them, and they could have refused them on those grounds.

In addition, it’s unclear the extent to which the governor’s policy was responsible for nursing home COVID-19 deaths. Infection control is a long-standing problem in nursing homes, predating the pandemic, and a report showed peak numbers of nursing home deaths came prior to the peak influx of patients as a result of Cuomo’s advisory. While the introduction of COVID-19 positive patients into nursing homes no doubt had an effect on infection spread, Caputo’s statement suggests it was solely responsible. That’s not what the evidence shows.

We rate this Mostly False.

  1. This is an editorial and an opinion piece. Not a statement of fact.
The facts are: The executive order was signed into law and was official NY state policy.
Nursing homes were forced by law to accept covid positive patients into their facilities.
MANY people died because of this by increasing the spread in these facilities which were already vulnerable.
There were a large number of Covid deaths in these facilities. Ask anyone who worked in them. Look at the numbers. It is one reason why NY State had the most Covid deaths per capita of any US State.
If the virus had not spread as much, by the basic epidemiologic principles of keeping infected contagious people AWAY and OUT of these facilities, fewer would have been infected and fewer would have died. There is nothing to debate about this except for a desperate attempt to whitewash what Cuomo did. Viruses spread from infected people to the people they interact with or dwell together with. That is how viruses work.
It's strange that you chose to become a Cuomo sycophant. What's so special about him that you love so much that makes you defend the indefensible?

Next you'll tell me that we should stop social distancing because "It's unclear the extent to which large gatherings and face to face exposures increased Covid cases and subsequent deaths."
You really can't be this stupid, so I know your sycophancy is just partisanship, and it's sickening.

  4. I rate this post "Mostly bovine faeces"
For months it's been well documented that Cuomo caused the outbreak in the nursing homes. Now, because of partisanship, it's "uncertain"? That's just a lie. It's another "Nothing to see here folks!" "We love Stalin because he hates Hitler!"
