The most obvious reason for the lower death toll is age.
The
first wave of the pandemic hit Europe's elderly people particularly
hard, spreading in hospitals and care homes, but this has changed over
the summer, with the virus circulating more widely among younger people
going to restaurants, bars and other public places.
Part of it, in North America at least, is the awareness and voluntary mask and distancing measures. Part of it is that the science has caught up to the virus so we know what to do and what not to do. And part of it is that as viruses propagate, their death toll goes down because it's not in their interest to kill off all their hosts.
