Why Some Doctors Are Now Moving Away From Ventilator Treatments for Coronavirus Patients

https://time.com/5818547/ventilators-coronavirus/

As health officials around the world push to get more ventilators to treat coronavirus patients, some doctors are moving away from using the breathing machines when they can. The reason: Some hospitals have reported unusually high death rates for coronavirus patients on ventilators, and some doctors worry that the machines could be harming certain patients.

  11. So because God didn't give us the user manual for CoVID we are still learning as we go. The data out of New York is actually quite interesting. People are showing up in the ER short of breath and with oxygen saturations of 50% (should be more than 95%). However, other than breathing quickly they look fine. Now, standard ER protocol is to say "Wow, that's a horrible saturation. Let's intubate" and that's what they've mostly be doing. However, some doctors have tried something different - just giving high flow oxygen through the nose. The saturations come up to the mid 80's and the patients do well. Looking back, many who didn't do well on the ventilators are from this group - they look well but have poor oxygen levels, which makes no sense but that's what's happening.

  12. Are you a medic, or quoting from somewhere? Thanks

  13. Many of them do not "look fine."
It is only a SUBSET of patients who have extremely low oxygen sat but are behaving and feeling mostly normal or ok. It is this subset which brings about many questions about what this disease is actually doing and how to treat it.

But some are dying before they even get out of the ambulance. Some are at extremely low oxygen saturations and are not fine or ok at all. Let's not overstate things.
