US Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib slammed a New York Times headline that framed the violence in Israel as being initiated by a barrage of rockets from Gaza.

"When will the world stop dehumanizing our Palestinian people who just want to be free?" she tweeted. "Headlines like this & framing it in this way just feeds into the continued lack of responsibility on Israel who unjustly oppress & target Palestinian children and families."

  1. She's got a point. If a kid is born and lives in Gaza, from his or her perspective, life is pretty bleak in some ways.

Funny, not really, a post of a Muslim anti-Israel congress lady complaining that NYT is too pro-Israel.
Torah thought on this week’s parsha in Israel, Emor
“They shall not marry a woman defiled by harlotry, nor shall they marry one divorced from her husband. For they are holy to their God and you must treat them as holy וקדשתו, since they offer the food of your God; they shall be holy קדש to you, for I the Lord who sanctify you מקדשכם am holy קדש.” (Leviticus 21:7-8).

וקדשתו - על כרחו, שאם לא רצה לגרש, הלקהו ויסרהו עד שיגרש:
קדש יהיה לך - נהוג בו קדושה לפתוח ראשון בכל דבר ולברך ראשון בסעודה
Wow a bet din is allowed to beat up the Cohain to force him to divorce the Cohain married in violation of verse 7! I thought we, on this website, are against beating up people to divorce their wives? My theory. Strictly a dead letter law, just to scare the Cohain from violating verse 7 in the first place. Otherwise beating a fellow to force him to divorce his wife is forbidden. Any thoughts?

  3. THERE IS NO PROBLEM FOR A PROPER BEIS DIN USING FORCE - IT IS PROBLEM FOR MODERN TIMES

  4. Thanks, Yair Hoffman’s piece from 2013. Yes, “The Mishna in Ksuvos (77a) lists a number of illnesses and professions in which a qualified Beis Din may force the husband to give a Get.”
    Ketghuboth 77a
“Mishnah. The following are compelled to divorce [their wives]: a man who is afflicted with boils, or has a polypus,19 or gathers [objectionable matter]20 or is a coppersmith20 or a tanner,20 whether they were [in such conditions or positions] before they married or whether they arose after they had married.”
    Interesting, earlier, Kethuboth 77a:
“Mishnah. A man in whom bodily defects have arisen cannot be compelled to divorce [his wife]. R. Simeon B. Gamaliel said: this applies only to minor defects, but in respect of major defects [The nature of these is explained in the Gemara] he can be compelled to divorce her.”
My theory: Our Sages prime concern is for having more babies. I like R. Simeon B. Gamaliel who says that bodily defects that have arisen after marriage, if minor, don’t force the poor fellow to divorce his wife. Why? With minor defects there is a good chance of further babies with that marriage. With major defects and an angry wife---no chance of further babies. In the K-G garbage heter, the fake/phony PhD psychology letter claims a major defect before the marriage. Ridiculous.

In other words, authentic halacha permits it, but what we claim is today authentic halacha is not necessarily the whole story.

and BTW, this is precisely a) what the late Rabbi Rackman was so critical of Orthodoxy about, i.e. things that halacha once allowed are today forbidden, and b) what led him to being essentially crucified, both within MO and from Ultra-O.

  7. Yair Hoffman’s 2013 piece “The Gemorah both in Ksuvos and Yevamos provides further cases”
    Yevamoth 112b:
“GEMARA. Rami b. Hama stated: Wherein lies the difference between a deaf man or a deaf woman [and an imbecile] that the marriage of the former should have been legalized by the Rabbis [As is evident from our Mishnah. Since halizah was required it is obvious that the preceding marriage, without which the question of halizah could never have arisen, is recognized as valid despite the fact that a deaf-mute (cf. supra p.788. n. 1), owing to his inferior intelligence, is elsewhere ineligible to effect a kinyan.] while that of the male imbecile or female imbecile was not legalized by the Rabbis? For it was taught: If an imbecile or a minor married, and then died, their wives are exempt from halizah and from the levirate marriage! [In the case of] a deaf man or a deaf woman, where the Rabbinical ordinance could be carried into practice [Deaf-mutes might well lead a happy matrimonial life, not only when the husband or wife is deaf, but even where both are afflicted with deafness.], the marriage was legalized by the Rabbis; [in that of] a male, or female imbecile, where the Rabbinical ordinance cannot be carried into practice, since no one could live with a serpent in the same basket [proverb. There can be no happy or enduring matrimonial union between an imbecile and a sane person or between two imbeciles.], the marriage was not legalized by the Rabbis”
The K-G garbage heter is based on faked letter from a PhD psychologist with Rabbi Greenblatt writing:
“I hereby return to that which I wrote regarding this matter concerning the lady Ms. Tamar Epstein, who married one gentleman who was subsequently diagnosed with mental illness, such that physicians testified his condition is incurable, and immediately she began to separate from him. And it is agreed by the poskim that mental illness of such magnitude that it is impossible for a spouse to live with him, similar to that which they said no human can live with a snake etc., is a worthy reason to annul kiddushin for it is mekach ta‘ut”
Yevamoth 112b is the source of the proverb Rabbi Greenblatt uses to nullify Aaron’s marriage to Tamar. Wow. This violates: “You shall not render an unfair decision: do not favor the poor or show deference to the rich; judge your kinsman fairly.” (Leviticus 19:15).

Hertz Chumash quotes in full here “These are the things you are to do: Speak the truth to one another, render true and perfect justice in your gates. And do not contrive evil against one another, and do not love perjury, because all those are things that I hate—declares the Lord.” (Zechariah 8:16-17).
Whew, now that the Mueller case is closed, we’re going to find out, in a few weeks maybe, if Comey and others contrived evil against Trump. Comey states in a NYT op-ed “And how could Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, after the release of Mr. Mueller’s report that detailed Mr. Trump’s determined efforts to obstruct justice, give a speech quoting the president on the importance of the rule of law?”
For everyone who does those things, everyone who deals dishonestly עול is abhorrent תועבת to the Lord your God. (Deuteronomy 25:16).
“You must not bring an abhorrent תועבה thing into your house, or you will be proscribed like it; you must reject it as abominable and abhorrent, for it is proscribed.” (Deuteronomy 7:26).
