The Barbary pirates took Americans as slaves, back before 1800. Jefferson was the president who had to have our military defeat them. This sort of behavior from Muslims is not new, and it's not what Jews, Christians or other groups we'd consider civilized do.
Obama's comment about this mother's dead son, thanking him for his service, was very impersonal. He's uncomfortable trying to sound like he cares. But then he warms up and does a wonderful job of sounding sincere.
