Advance notice: Disqus is switching to free version only with ads

Just letting you know that as of February 8 Disqus will be adding ads to their free version. Of course they also provide the option of ad free for $10/month. I will be going back to Blogger. Not sure what it will do to all the responses

  1. Can you move the Disqus comments to Blogger?

  2. What type of ads? Blogger's system is terrible

  3. What kind of ads would the free version show? And where?

  4. dont know. I have refused showing ads up till now even though it would have produced income for me - because I think it seriously detracts from the atmosphere. Now they are not giving me a choice so I will simple pull the plug on disqus

  5. don't know.
I agree that Blogger's system is terrible but I am not paying $120 year to avoid the ads

  6. I asked Disqus about that and am waiting for a response

  7. If it's ten dollars a month, do you want to see if several of your readers are willing to pitch in for it?

  8. If the readers want to pay for it - I have no problem.
Am also investigating if there are free alternatives - any recommendations are appreciated

  9. I would be willing to chip in a few bucks.

  10. I pledge $12. Do you have a PayPal account?

  11. An alternative that come to mind is Facebook commenting system plugin.

    Another is IntenseDebate. Or LiveFyre.

  12. yes. It has been on my blog for years.
I just put it at the top of the right side.

  13. If I get $120 designated for Disqus then I will pay the fee

  14. Can I suggest that you bring this post to the top every couple of days until the next year or two is contributed by the readers?

    ReplyDelete
  15. you can - but the point is that most readers don't care.
Not sure that going back to blogger is a terrible thing or that some of the free services are as good as disqus

  16. Going back to Blogger in itself may not be terrible, but to lose years worth of comments is terrible.

  17. Sorry to say, that's not really a long-term solution. How about try turning on the ads for a few days see what happens

  18. Why not? It's $10 a month, and can be split between so many readers. It shouldn't be hard to get...

  19. It is not likely to be raised - today I received a $2 donation - which after paypal took their share is $1.64
that is the first donation since January 24, 2016

  20. January's seem to be your lucky months. 😉

  21. I will pay $12/month for a year, and possibly beyond. That will leave $10 and change to cover the costs after the PayPay fee . Or do you need the $120 as a lump sum?

  22. thanks for the offer - I will check with disqus

  23. There's a PayPal donate button on the right of the webpage.

  24. From the conversation before it appears very hopeful you'll raise the sum to continue Disqus at $120/year.

In a worst case scenario where you need to drop Disqus, I'd suggest looking into IntenseDebate and seeing if they support transferring Disqus comments to IntenseDebate.

  25. If you don't want to have ads and pay $10/moth you can go for wpDiscuz. There is a solid alternative for WordPress users. You can use wpDiscuz instead of Disqus. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/b8594c11b45ad7768a8ed5144c6dfd6661b43f831375fd5a8756e184abd5cde2.png

  27. Disqus is now claiming that non-commercial sites i.e. no advertising - will still be free

    What about smaller, non-commercial sites?

For small, non-commercial sites, advertising will be optional. These sites will be able to use Disqus’ ads-optional subscription, free of charge.

Who qualifies as a small / non-commercial site?

Publishers will be able to self-identify. For personal blogs, educational sites, non-profits, and small sites that do not run other advertising, Disqus advertising will be optional. Currently, over 95% of sites on our network fall into this category.

We look forward to sharing more about new versions of Disqus, upcoming features, and our plans to help publishers grow soon.
