Donald Trump’s Early Thanksgiving – An Incredible Story About Anonymous Chessed That Trump Did

Yeshiva World News by Rabbi Hershy Ten is the president of Bikur Cholim Los Angeles.

Hamodia

[...] My history with Donald Trump began in July 1988. At that time, my wife and I had been living in Los Angeles for 5 years after moving here from New York. Our beautiful 3 year-old son Avraham Moshe was suffering from a severe lung condition.

When Avraham Moshe’s doctors found themselves at a loss to remedy his pain and suffering, I looked to my former home of New York with the hope that a set of fresh eyes could offer a chance at recovery. However, in order to pursue this we needed to fly my son across the country, but no private or commercial airline would do so due to potential liabilities, and our health insurance wouldn’t cover the cost. So there we were, with seemingly nowhere else to turn; but the thought of doing nothing was not an option. In the 1980s, Donald Trump’s fame was well-known to me, and well-known to most of the world. So when I once again awoke early one morning to the familiar sight of my son struggling to breathe, I decided to take a bold step – I picked up the phone and called Donald Trump’s office, spoke with him, and bluntly asked him to lend us his private plane for this mission of mercy. Without knowing me and without hesitation, he said yes.

A week later, Donald Trump’s 727 landed in Los Angeles and flew me, my wife, and my son along with 3 ICU nurses to LaGuardia Airport. We landed at sunrise and were greeted by our family-members on the tarmac, as well as an army of reporters. You must bear in mind that at this time there was no social media or internet; nevertheless the news was out and the NY press was abuzz with the story of the famous entrepreneur’s generosity with dozens of headlines such as, “Trump to the rescue of tyke” and “On two wings and a prayer”. Sadly, there was no new hope that could be provided to our son, and weeks later we returned home on the same plane. Though Avraham Moshe bravely battled for his life for years to come, he passed away just months shy of his bar mitzvah – yehi zichro baruch.

While my son’s z”l outcome was devastating, Mr. Trump’s enormous act of chesed rendered me forever grateful and gave me a unique insight of his character. Since that first contact, we were indelibly connected and remain so to this day. For almost 3 decades I’ve dropped by his office to say “hello” and not a year has passed without he and I exchanging wishes of a L’shana Tova and a Gut Yor. Those who know me both personally and in my role as president of Bikur Cholim (Los Angeles) know that I’ve carried the impact of his kindness with me every day. However, for many years I had often wondered as to what personal impact this may have had on him. [...]

  1. Wow, I can't believe it. An actual pro-Trump article on this blog. Are you sure that you are feeling all right? Do you need me to call a doctor?

  2. I don't need a doctor but you obviously do. People are complex as we saw with Shlomo Carlebach. I don't have a problem recognizing the good people do. But that doesn't prevent me from pointing out the problematic things.

  3. Good point, but for a philosophical/ theological/ contemporary Jewish site, you seem to be hung up on Trump presidency. Some of your articles read more like the Daily Kos. I'm more of a NeverTrumper, but I don't think much of his presidency directly involves the direction this blog usually takes.

  4. If you were actually interested in recognizing the good, you would have posted at least one pro-Trump article for every anti-Trump article that you posted. But your ratio was more like 1:10. And, for that matter, you would have posted some positive stories about Shlomo Carlebach which outnumber the negative stories by more than 100 to 1. But you didn't. And I am sure that you will provide us with a noble explanation for both of these things.

  5. Seems like you never accept anything. Go ask Rav Moshe Shternbuch if you should farshmutz Shlomo Carlebach Z"L on your website. Let's see if you accept what he says. Your so-called Rebbi Rav Moshe Feinstein (ZT"L) did not even reference him by name in his teshuva. But you have your own rules. I don't envy you for what you did.

  6. There's another famous story short Trump that I've heard numerous times from different sources over many years, long before Trump ran for office.

Someone got stuck on the side of the highway. A kollel Yid saw the broken down car and pulled over to see if he could help. The guy in the back seat of the limo said they got a flat and are waiting for someone to get the spare on. The kollel guy said he could quickly do it for them. He did it.

The passenger asked him how much he should pay him. The kollel guy said no payment necessary. The passenger said how can I thank you. Kollel guy says send my wife flowers. He gives his address for that.

A week later he gets a thank you card from Donald Trump for fixing his tire and letting him know he paid off the kollel guys mortgage.

  7. When the group of frum Yidden met Trump during the primary at Trump Tower, one of the Heimish Yidden at the meeting asked Trump is this story with his broken car and paying off the mortgage was true, and Trump confirmed this long retold story was indeed true. It is on the video of this meeting from March/April.

  8. we definitely will not be in the same place in the Next World. I assume you didn't like Making of a Godol - but Rav Sternbuch does

  9. Perhaps Trump's team is reading this blog, after all: Trump just "disavowed" the alt right. Some wonder, though, why he has not been as forceful and quick in denouncing them as he has with other groups like the "Hamilton" cast, immigrants, anti-trump protesters, and so-on. No "twitter" attacks on the group, for example, as is his usual MO. Especially, after the widely publicized "white" nationalist "Veranstaltung" (Event) in washington, dc, "hailing" him and his "Sieg". One would have expected a speedy and forceful twitter denunciation of the group by the president-elect, as with all his other attacks.

  10. Something strange about chareidi publications. Does the issur of lo sechanem (not praising an akum needlessly) no longer exist?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I think the idea of the article was hakarat hatov rather than praise.

  12. My gut feeling is that Mr. Trump has some Jewish blood in his lineage. His older brother thought he was Jewish. His daughter converts to Judaism. The story I was told was that she went to a Shul for Kabbolos Shabbos and the man who was going to be her guide was not well that night, and the man she eventually married stepped in to to take over.

  13. She converted because she wanted to marry her husband.

  14. The full 30 minutes or so meeting video was on YouTube somewhere, a day after it happened in April. Maybe on Yossi Gestetner's channel. It was this meeting:

  17. Praising the head of government is not needless.

  18. 1) Trump confirmed this story is true. He said so several months ago and he was video recorded stating so.

    2) This story of relatively well known. I've heard it numerous times over the years, from many different sources. The first time I heard it was about 20 years ago.

  20. It seems that there is a good side in President elect Trump. You can also see it by the two ladies that he selected,Devoss for education secretary, and Haley for the UN as both ladies were really anti-Trump during his nomination. But still somehow,Trump has seems to forgive and forget, and let them come aboard, despite their negativity toward him.

  21. The chesed was done by an akum (Trump) for a jew.

  22. Not the story I got. Her interest in Judaism preceded meeting her husband to-be.
