Yated publishes ban against Mishpacha

Kikkar HaShabbat

One of the great problems with the "Mishpacha" magazine, especially the English-language one, has been its blatant gung-ho support of any and all forms of proselytizations of gentiles, publicizing the seeking out of all sorts of dubious "lost 'Jews'" and the glorification of controversial sects and groups such as the Conversos-Marranos, Russian sects, giving PR to Michale Freund's Shavie Israel agenda, and promoting in articles of converts and the descendants of long very mixed-up marriages of people who had long apostacised in places like Poland a Germany and hyping up conversions and covertees as latter-day "heroes" when it should have stayed far away from such controversial and dubious topics.

For that alone, it deserves a put-down, although that has not been the only motive of its ultra-Charedi critics who simply resent an independent voice they cannot control.

Why should the "Mishpacha" magazine get off free when the even marginally-independent-minded "Jewish Observer" within the Aguda yet ran afoul of its new masters who favored the voice of the Yated in America. So no surprise that the Yated in Israel is doing its job to bring down its true rival for Charedi readership.

  2. May I ask why the retractions of HaRav Kaerlitz and the other signers of the ban been posted?

Since they have already retracted isn't this a non-issue?

  3. Oy Vey. Another ban. Doesn't anyone recognize that these attempts at micromanaging our behavior reduce the image of our gedolim to that of police? I want to feel limitless respect for our gedolei Torah and rabbonim. Why must they denigrate themselves? Perhaps the causes of these bans are noble, but this has gone way too far. Maybe the next ban should be against these Kol Koreys.

  5. They might do well to publish the ban in English, considering the people who read Mishpacha Magazine can definitely read English.

  6. I am very troubled about this totally senseless and undeserved ban. I am going to protest this in the only way I can - by continuing to buy Mishpocha regularly.
I wish the Mishpocha staff continued hatzlocha with their highly-professional, erlich and thought-provoking publication.

  7. The ban is well understood.Mishpacha (in Hebrew at least) has a blatant agenda to glamorize the working world and financial success and thereby degrading the "unrealistic" frummies who believe in learning Torah mitoch hadchak under financial difficulties. While the stress suffered by families who can no longer do it needs to be seriously addressed we still believe that Lomdei Torah are the locomotive of our survival and to bring up our children to believe that the bedieved of the curse of B"zayas Apecha Tochal Lechem is the way real and intellegent Jews would prefer to live ,is horrible education in terms of authentic Jewish and Torah values.
The Jewish people survived throughout the centuries by refusing to accept "reality" as the only way.
I used to buy Mishpacha but in the last two years have stopped because I feel there is an editorial agendawhich runs counter to mine .

Eh? Mass kollel is a modern innovation! The Jewish people survived throughout the centuries by working for a living!

Is there a repository where all the ban are being kept ? I lost count of all the bans. Some of them are really confusing, I remember rav Elayashiv banned wearing Crocs for Yom Kippur but he did not specify which styles and which colors. Did he ban all the styles forever and ever ? every year there are new styles, does the ban have to be renewed every year ? If Mishpacha will change its editor would the ban has to be reconsidered ?

  10. I never read mispacha, but when you see the anti gedolim and chareidi bloggers praising them heartly and wishing them much sucess in changing the chareidi world to become like the mo,i'm amazed at the gedolim's foresight.

  11. RBSer didn't read carefully
My point was not to advocate mass Kollel but rather that "reality" is not the ONLY way.
R' Chaim of Volozhin already made the point that"many did like R' Shimon bar Yochai and did not succeed".It is not a path for the masses. But it was the Lomdei Torah who we idolized and saw as glamorous.Mishpacha would like all our children to view Lomdei Torah as naive fools who don't really understand that everything is good in moderation--even the love of Torah.
I think RBSer might do well to read the letter of the Chazon Ish zt"l about "Kitzoniut".

  12. The paper having an agenda different from your own is cause for you to 1. Not buy it, 2. Not read it, and 3. Buy a different paper which you feel fits better with. Your agenda. None of this is grounds for BANNING a paper/magazine. Some people need to grow up.

  13. Question for student V
Why do they put awarning on cigarettes let people decide to either not buy cigarretes or not smoke them or buy something else for the pleasure cigarrettes provide.
The answer obviously is that to protect peoples health we ban certain products.
Likewise when Talmidei Chachamim assess that something is spiritually dangerous to our children (or ourselves) they ban it.
If you relate to the words of Chazal that "One who causes another to sin is worse than one who physically kills another" then you get the point.
But maybe from your vantage point those words shouldn't be taken all that seriously

  14. The warning on cigarettes does allow people to buy it or not buy it. Some...actually many people still buy them despite the warning.

Scientific evidence showed cigarettes as proven to be dangerous to one's health. A bunch of zealous men sitting around a table who "decide" to ban a frum magazine based on political preferences cannot be considered even close to a comparison. No proof, no consensus, no evidence, no health relation, no authority. And they are not saying it's a warning that this differs from our preferences, they are saying you sin by reading it - big difference.

I really don't know why you think that a warning label on cigarettes with health information put there by a body with the authority to do so is a ban of the product. They are not banned. Go look around your yeshiva/kollel - many of your friends smoke. Or maybe you live on a different planet?

  15. Student v,i think you are the one who should grow up.Did you think why the banned this and not ynet?because the chareidi world knows who ynet is.But mispacha claims to service the community these rabbinim lead. Therefore they have to clarify things for their community.

  16. You've certainly changed your tune, haven't you, "c?" Here's a question for you. Do you really claim that "the chareidi world" does not know of mishpacha magazine? What a joke. You just reflexively defend anything supposedly said or done by a great rabbi no matter what the context. Try to think for yourself and formulate an opinion sometime (other than to disrespect me).
