Fish oil might prevent schizophrenia

ABC NEWS

A new study suggests that fish oil could be the key to a safe and effective form of treatment for young people with schizophrenia.

For young people at risk of developing the mental illness, early treatment is generally seen as the best way to avoid full-blown psychosis down the track.

  1. This is an important story. I hope the research bears this out.

Much tragedy and pain could be avoided.

  2. Pregnant mothers who take fish oil have happier, healthier, and more intelligent children. And they are less prone to mental illness.
Probiotics , or yoghurt, and their children are less prone to alelrgies.

  3. Take it a logical step further.

Fish is an extremely healthy food. A great source of protein, the right kind of fats and, if you like salmon, calcium. It's a great substitute for beef and chicken and, unless you're chumra-crazy, you can even have milchigs with it!

  4. Just bear in mind that most fish oil capsules contain "fish" oil from nonkosher sources. Therefore probably OK as medication but otherwise eat kosher oily cold water fish as part of your regular diet.
